What is the difference between transmigration and reincarnation in web novels?

These two terms get used almost interchangeably by casual readers but describe meaningfully different setups within the isekai and fantasy web novel genre.

Reincarnation refers to a character dying in one world and being reborn in another, typically starting life over as a baby or young child. They grow up in the new world from the very beginning, carrying memories and knowledge from their previous life while living through an actual childhood. The emotional texture of these stories tends to involve a second-chance intimacy with the world, because the protagonist builds relationships and reputation from scratch even if they have adult understanding underneath. "Even a Cicada Becomes a Dragon If Reborn" captures this spirit: a soul reborn into a completely different form in a different world, having to discover what that existence means from the beginning.

Transmigration is faster and more direct. The protagonist suddenly finds themselves inside the body of an existing character in another world, usually with that character's memories alongside their own. They do not grow up there: they arrive as an adult into a life already in progress, often with debts, enemies, and relationships already attached. This creates immediate tension because the protagonist has to navigate a life they did not choose and avoid consequences set in motion before they arrived. "Our Binding Love: My Gentle Tyrant" is a transmigration story where Ye Mu arrives inside a doomed character in a novel she already knows, meaning she has foreknowledge of how that character dies and must figure out how to change course without the luxury of starting fresh.

In practice many novels blend elements of both, but knowing which setup a story uses helps set expectations for pacing and how quickly the protagonist's new life begins putting pressure on them.
