Chapter 338: Surveyors in White

The preservation lamps dimmed while the final archive copies remained beneath recorder glass. Hajin saw every flame lean toward the bronze succession tree before the first alarm reached the western stair.

Fourteen robed statues occupied shallow niches throughout the archive wing, each carrying a stone compass or measuring rod. Their inactive faces had watched generations of catalog work without appearing inside any foundation index.

White-gold lines opened behind their carved eyes at precisely the same moment across every niche. Light poured through the old stone without cracking it, then assembled into slender figures standing one pace before every niche.

The original statues remained behind them with their hands still folded around stone instruments. Each new figure wore a smooth face, jointed white-gold limbs, plus a surveyor’s rod divided by moving script.

Hajin opened his first Ring when three rods turned toward the restricted catalog bay. Aegis unfolded across the recorders before the nearest white-gold line could pass through their bodies.

The line struck his shield, divided around its edge, then measured him from both sides. Four incomplete circles appeared briefly across his shadow while gold-purple script gathered near his covered right forearm.

Another figure faced Didi before she could move behind the archive table. Its rod traced her ice-flower seal, her three resting Shards, plus the faint royal current still fading from the bronze override.

Pale lines crossed her outline without entering her body or forcing mana through her Shards. The figure copied her blood frequency onto the blank surface where its face should have rested.

Ferra dragged her divided cradle behind a shelf brace when the remaining rods turned together. The recovered refusal socket held zero stored response, although its empty geometry reflected their white-gold script back across the room.

Three survey lines crossed the disconnected ceramic panels from different angles without touching their surfaces. None completed an orbit around the socket, activated its dead aperture, or changed the capital bearing preserved inside its passive trace.

One royal guard raised his sword as the nearest figure stepped across the recorder line. Its smooth hand caught the blade without striking him, while the measuring rod turned toward the sealed Gazel prayer behind his shoulder.

Hajin sent the Legendary Chain beneath the guard’s wrist before the figure could pin him against the shelf. Two links pulled the man backward while Aegis widened into a clear lane toward the eastern service stair.

"Recorders plus escort leave through the east passage," he said, keeping the chain outside Ferra’s divided cradle, "carry the certified copies and warn every occupied floor."

The guard captain hesitated beside Didi until she pushed the eight-name ledger into his protected case. Her suspension notice traveled behind it, preserving both the evidence plus the cost already attached to her seal.

"The originals remain under archive lock with me," she said, sealing the case against his chest, "take the copies beyond this wing before anyone closes another route."

Juna crossed the retreat lane without drawing a Wing and struck the captured sword from the construct’s hand. The guard captain recovered his footing, then moved both recorders between the remaining escorts.

Two smooth figures shifted to intercept them near the stair instead of pursuing Hajin. He drove Aegis sideways across their measuring rods, creating enough space for the complete escort to reach the eastern stair.

No system reward followed the impact because neither shell broke or registered as defeated. Their white-gold joints bent against the shield, recorded its angle, then released the lane after the people carrying evidence cleared them.

Aria spread Divine Eye through the western wing while Hajin held the final shield edge. Every constructed body returned shaped divine mana, old palace dust, plus an identical remote instruction without any mortal soul signature.

Their bodies contained no breath rhythm, memory pattern, emotional residue, or human core beneath the shaped light. Divine Eye found only repeatable construction layers surrounding a narrow instruction channel that remained pointed beyond the palace.

Breaking those channels could prevent delivery without forcing a trapped person to absorb the damage. Until the shells separated, however, their identical signals concealed which route mattered most to the remote observer.

"They are empty constructs," Aria said, marking every shell separately inside his sight, "destroying them will harm no mortal host, but each intact body carries the measurements it has gathered."

The figures confirmed her warning by abandoning the protected retreat lane together. None attempted another strike against Didi, Hajin, or the socket after their marks finished copying.

Six turned upward through narrow maintenance ladders leading toward the archive roofline. Their rods unfolded into hooked white-gold limbs that found seams between ward tiles without disturbing the occupied rooms below.

Four moved deeper among the archive support galleries, measuring shelf anchors, ceiling braces, plus the central lintel above Didi. The remaining four descended through the western undercroft access connected to Ferra’s exposed foundation sockets.

They had divided their observations across three routes instead of concentrating force upon Hajin. Killing one group would leave two others carrying the measurements toward separate palace objectives.

"The roof group is searching for an exit aperture," Aria said, projecting their shared lines across the ceiling, "the archive group is mapping structural loads, while the undercroft group is approaching the incarnation feeds."

Ferra locked the refusal socket behind five disconnected ceramic faces and stamped each closure. The white-gold measurement remained copied inside the departing shells without leaving an active mark upon her cradle.

"Nothing touches those old pins while I still hold their receipt," she said, sending two forge-light tools toward the lower access, "but I cannot guard the socket, the archive supports, plus the undercroft together."

Didi drew her sword beside the restricted catalog bay without reopening her resting Shards. She placed herself between the original records and the four surveyors measuring the central archive supports.

"Gazel’s record stays sealed, and my brother’s withdrawal ledger leaves through the copies," she said, watching the figures examine the lintel, "choose the route that can carry their information away fastest."

The six climbing figures reached the upper gallery before either lower group touched a foundation pin. Their rods connected briefly across separate ladders, forming the beginning of one white-gold shape above the roof wards.

Juna looked upward when the linked outline crossed her eyes above the western archive aisle. She read the six moving angles, the occupied rooms below them, plus the open sky beyond the western eaves.

"They will clear the roof before they open it," she said, lowering her center of balance toward the gallery stair, "I can cut them where nothing falls on servants."

Loccy reached the eastern landing behind the last retreating guard with her hammer already secured across both hands. Hajin directed her toward Didi and the archive supports before turning after Juna.

The guard escort continued down the cleared east passage with every certified copy intact. Behind them, fourteen divine shells carried three stolen measurements toward the roof, the sealed archive, plus the undercroft that could turn those measurements into something worse.
