Chapter 428: The Crown Holds the City

The King’s first step away from the dais cracked the stone beneath his feet. His twenty Shards left the throne circuit together, carrying surviving royal pressure into the districts that still had walls, bridges, and living people behind them.

The second step opened a golden route through the eastern ward. The third caught a collapsing balcony before it reached the street, and the King’s burned shoulders shook when he redirected that weight toward an empty reservoir.

"The containment moves with me, and the throne no longer receives the entire city’s recoil through one body."

Hajin felt the change through the Chain, and the shell pulled against the palace, yet no royal pressure entered the links from the King’s former position.

The spatial map remained simple, and the hostless avatar and Loccy’s carried foundation occupied the central palace.

The western archive held the evacuated civilians. Rumi’s road mouth opened at the palace edge, and Nari’s paired mark waited at the distant mountain basin.

Ferra marked the central boundary with white ceramic dust as the line stopped at the archive wall, turned around the recovery rooms, and ended beneath the throne where Loccy’s Worldbearer still carried the connected stone.

"Every civilian route leaves the declared burden, and the central shell remains the only hostile structure inside the palace map."

The King answered through the ward line. "Move the people before the foundation, and keep my protection outside the child’s chosen bloodline."

Royal healers bound the King’s burned hand and shoulders during the transfer. He accepted the pain without returning to the throne, while the remaining Court discharge entered evacuated reservoirs rather than occupied streets.

One reservoir had filled with debris as the King diverted its pressure into a verified empty square, checked the receiving point through the ward line, and continued toward the western archive.

"The central foundation no longer requires my body, and every surviving guard evacuates through the marked routes now."

District captains repeated the order as a safety command as no Dominion label entered the instruction, and guards could refuse suicidal assignments without losing their civic oaths.

Hajin held the hostless shell through four Rings and the Legendary Chain. Ferra’s damaged pin kept one edge exposed, while Loccy carried the connected central mass beneath the rising avatar.

Rumi maintained the palace mouth with two amber Wings. Nari kept the far basin endpoint steady through two smoke-gold folds, though the route still broke apart in the middle whenever the foundation pressed against it.

"The mouth and endpoint remain clear, and our Wings can mark direction without moving the palace through the broken middle."

"Hold the road open without forcing another transfer, and keep the empty basin free of falling foundation."

Eirwen’s riders confirmed that the mountain passes and headwaters remained outside the collapse belt. No mass transfer began while the capital still contained workers and guards.

The western archive received the King’s ward pressure next. Golden circulation reinforced the physical walls, doors, and recovery rooms without entering Bloodline Sanctuary or claiming the child sheltered inside.

Forty-one guards, six engineers, Didi, and the protected child remained on the civilian ledger. The child refused a royal carriage, and the four workers who had carried the records desk earlier returned only after announcing each movement.

"The child chooses the desk as shelter, and nobody turns evacuation into another command over her body."

Didi stood beside the desk with her sword lowered, and Hajin kept tension on the Chain and addressed her across the communication line.

"Your brother is beyond the sealed archive, and the remaining civilians need your escort before you return to the shell."

The answer came after Didi looked once toward the rising avatar. "I will take them out, and that movement does not surrender my place in the remaining fight."

Rumi offered a person-wide spatial route around the collapsed stairs as the child’s shoulders tightened at the amber Wing, and the workers waited while Ferra’s engineers cleared the blockage through ordinary labor.

Falling grit struck the records desk as the corridor shuddered. One worker placed his back against the frame, another cleared loose stone by hand, and the third kept the blanket from sliding across the child’s face.

"The route stays ordinary while the child refuses the shortcut, and nobody turns that refusal into a delay she must apologize for."

Didi lowered her sword beside the desk. Vella kept her treatment hand visible, and the Watcher remained at the doorway without crossing the child’s chosen distance.

The shortcut remained unused, and Didi walked beside the records desk through the archive halls while the King’s ward pressure protected the route without becoming a restraint.

Vella asked before touching the child’s wrist as the child accepted only the treatment group beside the desk, and Didi ordered every guard to keep their hands visible.

"The ward protects the walls and the people who choose to remain inside them, and it does not become adoption of the bloodline sheltered here."

The King answered through the royal line. "Royal protection stays outside her bloodline, and physical doors remain the guards’ only assignment."

The final engineers disconnected civilian supports from Loccy’s declared mass while Eirwen’s riders matched each name to a destination, and the archive ledger closed only after every guard, clerk, patient, and worker reached the western circuit.

The ledger required two separate confirmations for each person. One guard repeated the destination aloud, while an engineer touched the physical doorway before Eirwen’s rider marked the name clear.

"The list closes only when a person has a place to stand, and a golden route without a physical destination is not an evacuation."

The King pressed his ward across the archive exterior. Blood opened again along his burned hand, though the golden pressure stayed outside Sanctuary and held the walls against the next foundation tremor.

The King’s pressure remained on the archive exterior, and his burned shoulders shook under the load, yet he kept the wards outside Sanctuary and moved no Shard toward the hostless avatar.

"The civilian ledger is clear, and the central palace now contains only declared foundation, willing fighters, and the active shell."

Eirwen’s confirmation traveled through the riders, and Didi stopped beside the archive exit and placed one hand on the desk’s edge, feeling the child’s chosen shelter remain ordinary beneath the royal ward.

"The group is safe, and I return to the fight by my own decision."

The return path used the empty archive halls as Didi crossed the cleared boundary without a blood shield granting permission, without a Crown order sending her, and without asking the King to approve the choice.

Her first step back passed the sealed archive door, and the second crossed Ferra’s ceramic boundary.

The third reached Hajin’s line, where the Chain’s groan told her the shell had noticed her return.

"The child remains behind a chosen refuge, and I return to the person who is still holding the city away from the mountain road."

Hajin kept his wounded hand closed around the Chain. "Then stand on the protected side, and let your choice strengthen the line without becoming another command."

Hajin saw her rejoin the central line as the Chain groaned around the hostless shell. Ferra painted the final boundary across the remaining supports, while Loccy kept the verified mass from expanding into the evacuated district.

Rumi preserved the mountain mouth. Nari preserved the distant endpoint.

Their paired Wings still lacked enough evolution to carry the central structure, but no civilian remained inside the declared burden.

The King checked every Shard connection after the service bridge separated from the western archive. Golden pressure held the capital from outside the shell, and the empty wardstones at the palace exits supplied light and structural warning without assigning people to operate them.

Didi reached Hajin’s side as her sword returned to guard position, and her gaze fixed on the hostless body trying to turn the Legendary Chain into assigned property.

"The city is clear, and the remaining fight can finally spend its force without carrying an unwilling person inside the weapon."

Loccy’s arms strained beneath Worldbearer. Vella treated the fractures by touch, while Hajin kept Phase Lock around his Decree Wound and refused to let the larger pressure fool him into opening another damaged Ring.

The King’s containment settled over the last occupied street as Eirwen closed the civilian ledger, Ferra sealed the archive boundary, and the twins held a mountain road that remained a direction rather than a passage.

The final wardstone lit at the palace exit, with no guard beside it and no Crown label inside its stone, turning red only when a piece of the hostless shell crossed the evacuated boundary.

Didi watched the red flash, then raised her sword, and the city had not become safe, though it had stopped being trapped inside the weapon’s declared burden.

No evacuation route crossed the hostless shell, and no civilian ward followed Worldbearer.

The city stood outside the weapon, and every remaining fighter faced the avatar with a clear boundary beneath their feet.

The mountain mouth widened by one handspan without becoming a road. Rumi held the near mark, Nari held the far basin, Loccy carried the central mass, and Hajin tightened the Chain against the shell’s attempt to claim it.

The King stood outside the throne with burned hands and twenty Shards spread through the capital. Didi stood beside Hajin by choice, and the last civilian name had a physical destination beyond the fight.

The city was clear enough for the final battle to begin without asking an unwilling person to pay its next cost.
