Chapter 443: Husband at the Breakfast Table

Breakfast in the Sixth was never ceremonial, which made Eirwen’s timing more dangerous than a banquet toast. The household table held bread, boiled roots, clinic tea, and one pot of stew.

Ferra had declared the stew edible after tasting it like a metal sample. Loccy sat with both arms wrapped, her coat open so the child could keep a fist in the fabric without climbing her lap.

Rumi took the outer bench seat while Nari took the wall seat, and Juna claimed the end with the clearest view of both doors.

Eirwen arrived from the embassy house with flour on one cuff. She had helped the morning kitchen staff carry trays rather than waiting to be served as an envoy.

She set a bowl in front of Hajin and used the title once, clean and unornamented. Eirwen said, "Eat while it is hot, husband."

The whole table noticed the word at the same instant. Juna’s ears went flat before forcing themselves level again.

Vella’s mouth tipped toward a laugh while Ferra snorted into her cup. Rumi looked at Nari, and both twins checked the exits without speaking for each other.

Hajin kept his hands on the bowl and thought, ’There it is, one word and the whole room invents a ranking.’

Juna cut through the silence and said, "We are not married, so what does that word buy you at this table?"

Eirwen stood where everyone could see her hands and said, "Among my people, an intended spouse may use the marital title after declaring courtship and receiving leave to continue, because it names direction rather than completed ownership."

Vella poured tea without offering Eirwen the head of the table. She watched the child rather than the elf and said, "Direction still lands in a house with rules, so listen before you rearrange anyone."

Eirwen answered, "That is why I am here at breakfast, because I am learning the house rather than claiming seats."

[CringeSlayer91: she said husband and immediately got cross-examined, elite]

[GrandmaViewer: good, make her learn the house instead of renaming it]

Eirwen turned toward Juna before anyone else could fill the silence with jokes. She asked, "What do you need kept intact in the mornings?"

Juna tapped the end of the table and said, "I take first door watch with tea, nobody moves my sight line, nobody sits in my cut lane, and nobody calls me little sister while I count threats."

Eirwen answered without smiling as if the list were cute, "Understood, and your door watch stays yours."

She looked next at Vella across the teapot and asked, "Clinic?"

Vella replied, "Patients before guests, because if the child seizes, Sanctuary noise comes before embassy manners."

She tipped the pot once and continued, "If Loccy’s wraps need changing, the hallway clears, and you do not enter treatment rooms to observe romance."

Eirwen answered, "I will not, and I will carry supplies when you ask."

Ferra stabbed a root, pointed at the forge map near the pantry, and said, "Forge rules are older than your title, so no open flames near stock, no metal demands during a pour, and hinges cost the posted rate."

Eirwen said, "I already hired at posted rates, and I can repeat the habit."

Rumi leaned forward before Nari could answer for both of them. She said, "I want the outer seat when we eat, because routes feel cleaner from there."

Nari kept her back to the wall and her bowl close. She said, "I want a wall, and I speak for myself, so do not order us as one mouth."

Eirwen inclined her head to each twin separately and said, "Separate preferences noted, because mirrored Wings are not mirrored wills."

Ash climbed into Hajin’s lap without asking permission from the new title and scowled when Eirwen’s presence changed the angle of available shoulders.

Ash gripped Hajin’s shirt and said, "Still here."

Hajin steadied him with one arm and answered, "I know, and she is not replacing your perch."

The child watched from Loccy’s coat edge, her eyes moving from mouth to mouth without offering a name or judgment. When Eirwen’s gaze crossed her, Eirwen looked away first rather than forcing a greeting.

Hajin ate because the bowl would get cold and thought, ’She is doing the work, not collecting applause for the word.’

Lana wrote nothing down because breakfast was not a witness event. Marrick passed through only to steal bread and confirm the embassy hire sheets had cleared overnight.

Marrick said, "If anyone on the street asks whether the lord is married now, I will say courtship under Alder custom and deny wedding taxes."

Eirwen answered, "Correct, and the tax record should remain as boring as the treaty wording."

Juna studied her a moment longer before returning to her tea with the door still in sight. She said, "You can use the word if you keep learning the house harder than you pronounce it."

Eirwen glanced once at Hajin and said, "That is the agreement I made with him, because I must earn a place rather than announce one."

Ferra grunted, which from her counted as provisional acceptance of the morning. Vella set an extra cup within the child’s reach without comment.

Vella looked at Eirwen and said, "Come by the clinic after breakfast if you want useful work, because bandage counts need hands more than titles do."

Eirwen set her empty bowl aside and answered, "I will."

Rumi took a second piece of bread from the common plate. Nari did not at first, then changed her mind and took one as well.

That small separate choice made Eirwen tip her mouth in private approval, but she did not voice it as praise. The household noticed the restraint and returned to eating.

[BunnySupremacy: juna set terms and the elf took notes, that is romance with teeth]

[ashley (Mod): keep comments on the household rules shown]

Hajin finished the bowl and did not turn the title into a speech. He spoke low across the table noise and said, "You heard them, because the word survives only if the routines do."

Eirwen answered, "Then I will serve breakfast when asked, carry clinic trays when needed, stay out of pour windows, plus leave the twins their seats, because husband remains a direction I am earning at this table."

She used it no second time that morning. The meal ended in ordinary noise as wraps were checked and the embassy door was unlocked for workers.

Ash complained about shoulder space, Loccy refused help she did not need, and Juna reclaimed the door watch with her cup. Eirwen washed her own bowl before returning to the repaired house.

The silverwood braid remained plain, and no claim rested on the head of the table. Hajin watched her go and thought, ’Courtship with chores is better than courtship with banners.’

Hans stuck his head in only to steal the last heel of bread and report that the gate crowd had already tried inventing a wedding date from the single word.

Hajin did not look up from the empty bowl ring on the wood and said, "Tell them no."

Hans chewed without apology and answered, "Already did, twice."

Vella called Eirwen back from the doorway to carry a stack of clean wraps. Eirwen returned without asking whether the task suited her title.

Juna kept the outer seat, Nari kept the wall, and Rumi kept the route side. The table remained shared because every person had stated a place rather than accepting one assigned by the title.

Eirwen carried the empty bowls to the wash basin before Vella called her toward the clinic. She left the breakfast table without asking whether useful work counted as part of courtship.

Hajin watched the household return to its ordinary rhythm, where a title could be questioned without becoming a fight and a seat could be chosen without becoming a rank.

The house accepted Eirwen through repeated conduct rather than a ceremonial announcement while her word remained a direction and the table remained shared ground.
