Chapter 452: An Empty Basin and an Ancient Witness

The guild board accepted its first contracts before sunrise, while Hajin left the Sixth before every question became another command aimed at him.

Taren assigned bridge inspections, grain escorts, and a mine survey with written limits, then made each crew sign beside the emergency clause.

Hajin watched the signatures gather and thought, ’The board is moving without me,’ folding the route list beneath his arm, ’which is either success or an organized disaster.’

Marrick read over his shoulder and said, "It’s success until evidence says otherwise, so stop treating a working institution like a family insult."

Hajin moved one finger from the reserve clause and replied, "The paper isn’t the problem, but clear clauses can make careless people stop thinking."

Taren folded the page at its corner and answered, "The guild will teach them through paid work and records, which is why you’re going to the basin."

Ferra waited beside the eastern gate with sealed cases, pressure instruments, and metal pins, her chalk-dusted cuff already marked by the morning’s preparations.

The Watcher stood behind her, her height dwarfing the road, with rose-gold eyes lowered toward the ruined palace while Ash remained at the registry beside the unchanged socket bearing.

Hajin counted the eastern road on his knuckles and thought, ’Leaving him behind isn’t abandonment,’ keeping his voice from the waiting guards, ’but I’ll still measure every mile between us.’

Loccy approached with four Wings folded beneath her brace, her cropped hair damp, and dark healing lines visible around both wrists.

Loccy adjusted Ferra’s empty case and said, "Vella cleared four Wings for brief use, and Ferra cleared me to carry the case."

Ferra pulled the case back with one hand and replied, "The empty case, because the full one weighs more than your humor can justify."

Loccy gave her a long look and answered, "Then I’ll protect the empty case with great dignity, since nobody has trusted me with anything heavier."

Loccy lowered her hand from the case and replied, "I will tell you before the information starts making decisions for me."

They left through the eastern gate while the Sixth watched the new board continue its work behind them.

The basin had once held a palace wing, a training court, and a royal demonstration ground, but fire left broken columns around a hollow of black soil.

Ferra placed five metal pins along the old foundation, then checked each line twice before she allowed the group past the surviving wall.

She pointed toward the stones and said, "Everyone stays outside the failure path, because the ruin gets to prove its condition before anyone tests it."

Hajin looked across the empty ground and asked, "You brought six posts for a six-ring test, but the Watcher supplies the pressure."

Ferra opened the first case and answered, "The test needs known force and response, while her pressure is measured enough to keep the ruin from punishing a village."

The Watcher lowered one heavy hand beside the boundary and said, "I can press through the dead shell without striking beyond it, but old stone may mistake testing for attack."

Ferra set a copper disk over the first pin and replied, "That is why witnesses stand outside the line, and why every result gets recorded before anyone interprets it."

Hajin felt six Rings waiting beneath his skin and thought, ’Availability isn’t permission,’ touching the first mark on his wrist, ’because careless strength still leaves someone else to repair the ground.’

He opened the first Ring, and Aegis settled over his body without disturbing the ash around his feet.

Ferra watched the nearest disk and said, "The first response is stable, with no external pull and no fracture beneath the western marker."

The Watcher raised one hand and sent a narrow pressure line across the basin, while the columns groaned without shedding stone.

Hajin held still as the force pressed against Aegis, then answered, "Don’t increase it yet, because the first Ring needs to show how it receives the load."

Juna studied the ruined foundation and reported, "The stone is moving below the surface, but nothing is rising and the town road remains clear."

Vella crouched beside the nearest marker and replied, "That’s old compression leaving the foundation, not a living network reaching for him."

The Watcher lowered her hand before the basin answered with falling stone, so the pressure faded into dust and wind.

Hajin watched the quiet columns and thought, ’She can stop before victory becomes damage,’ rubbing the warmth from his wrist, ’which makes this more useful than a duel.’

Ferra changed two disks and said, "One ring is stable, but the foundation absorbed more pressure than the old plans predicted."

Hajin opened a second Ring, then a third, and let the orbits turn separately while Aegis spread across the pressure line.

The basin darkened beneath the layered fields, and the Watcher increased her force until the western marker rang once.

Ferra crossed the safe line after Vella nodded and said, "That isn’t a failure tone, but the sound came from beneath the palace shell."

She brushed ash away, and three shallow circles appeared beside a narrow line toward the eastern peaks, with a notch where something had been removed.

The slab also carried three drilled holes without matching pins, so the surviving record could witness pressure but could not serve as a working tool.

Ferra touched the worn edge and said, "This is an ancient witness plate, and it recorded force through the foundation, but its maker and original name are gone."

The Watcher stopped outside the boundary and answered, "Its grammar predates the Crown, but it isn’t a command and it isn’t one of the living custodians."

Hajin looked from the notch to the eastern line and asked, "What did it witness?"

The Watcher lowered her rose-gold eyes and replied, "A force passed through the palace, perhaps a refusal, but the plate kept pressure rather than memory."

Ferra sealed the slab in a padded case and said, "Then it will witness this test without becoming part of it, and nobody drills below the carving."

Hajin opened the fourth, fifth, and sixth Rings in sequence, while the basin’s tremor stopped at the marked boundary.

The Watcher pressed harder without making the force lethal, and the disks flashed as Juna counted each foundation shift.

Loccy raised four Wings for three breaths when a marker began to collapse, caught the post with one hand, and dismissed the Wings before her shoulders tightened.

Loccy looked at the rescued marker and said, "It stayed attached, my arms stayed attached, and I still don’t trust either result enough to celebrate."

Vella checked the healing lines and answered, "That is a satisfactory result, not an invitation to repeat it without rest."

Hajin held six Rings until every disk recorded the pressure, then closed them before the tattoo paths burned beneath his skin.

The Watcher lowered her hand, while dust and wind settled around the broken stones inside the basin.

Hajin thought, ’The basin survived,’ collecting the marked disks from Ferra, ’so tomorrow can be more ambitious without becoming careless.’

Ferra closed the archive case and said, "The witness plate stays with the guild, and we wait for Eirwen to check the eastern line before touching the road beyond it."

Juna looked toward the distant peaks and replied, "The line points past the mountain, but it doesn’t tell us who walked there or whether anyone returned."

Hajin dismissed the last Ring and answered, "Then we record the limit, leave the road unknown, and return before the evening meal becomes another expense."

They reached the Sixth before sunset with measurements, one ancient witness plate, and no new wound for the town to pay for.
