Chapter 463: Twelve Shards at the Gate

The Alder capital appeared beyond the third root road as a wall of living trunks, pale leaves, and bridges crossing air without visible supports.

Bark smelled of rain and crushed herbs, while pale bridge surfaces gave back the wagons’ weight with a low living creak.

The air tasted green and wet beneath the leaves, with root sap sharp on every breath.

Eirwen stopped before the final gate, removed her travel cloak, and faced the tree wall while twelve Shards waited beneath her skin.

She said, "The capital doesn’t open for a name alone, because the gate asks whether I vouch for every person who crossed Alder with me."

Hajin touched the refusal socket case and replied, "Vouch for the travelers, not for the choices they may make after entering, because witness isn’t ownership."

Hajin watched the wall’s roots tighten and thought, ’The gate is looking for a weapon to fear,’ keeping his Rings closed, ’so I won’t give it a performance.’

Eirwen stepped onto the root bridge, and one Shard appeared above her shoulder before another joined it in a slow pale orbit.

The living wall leaned toward her as all twelve fragments circled, while the Watcher lowered her head and Ash watched without reaching toward the lights.

The demon child held Elina’s hand beside the rear wagon, and Didi kept the Crown seal wrapped against her chest.

Juna studied the twelve lights and said, "The gate isn’t checking whether you’re strong, because it’s checking whether it remembers what you were trusted to carry."

Eirwen answered, "It remembers my duty, and now it must decide whether my witness includes people the Court would rather exclude."

The root gate opened one narrow eye and said, "Name the burden, because the capital won’t accept an unnamed road into its inner branches."

Eirwen placed one hand against the bridge and replied, "I carry an accepted suitor, a refusal socket, independent summons, a royal investigator, a consented demon child, and a Guardian Beast."

Roots shifted across the road before the wall answered, "You carry dangerous categories, and each category may disturb the capital’s old agreements."

Eirwen kept her palm on the root and said, "I carry people who may be dangerous, but I won’t reduce them to danger before they act."

Six Shards brightened while Hajin kept his Rings closed, though the wall’s pressure reached his circulation and tested the socket case through its seals.

At the gate, the living eye turned toward Didi and said, "Royal blood detected, and the Court has closed its inner branches to that frequency since the last breach."

Didi stepped forward without the Crown seal raised and replied, "I enter under Eirwen’s witness, accept every refusal in the record, and won’t be placed outside the guest lattice without stated law."

Eirwen lifted her second hand and said, "I vouch for Didi as an investigator, not as an Alder claimant and not as a royal command."

A thin root reached toward Didi’s wrist, while she stood still and let it search for a blood oath.

Elina kept the seal at her waist without raising it, leaving the Crown present as a record rather than a voice inside the gate.

The root found no command to obey and withdrew without opening the bark, while Didi remained beneath the guest lattice.

The wall turned toward the demon child and said, "Unregistered bloodline, the capital cannot place a name on a child who hasn’t accepted one."

Eirwen replied, "Then don’t place one, because I vouch for a traveler who may return to the Sixth, remain in Alder, or leave without punishment."

The child looked from Eirwen to the roots, and Elina crouched beside her before saying, "You don’t need to touch the gate, because you only decide whether you want to cross."

One step carried the child toward Eirwen, and the roots parted without a designation appearing or an answer reaching the capital beyond her movement.

The Watcher approached the bridge with Ash against her shoulder and said, "I enter as Ash’s mother, not as the Crown’s old guardian, so a seat receives refusal."

The gate eye narrowed and answered, "Guardian Beast, your old duty remains inside the root record, and the capital remembers the position you fed."

The Watcher looked at the living wall and replied, "The duty remains history, but history doesn’t give the capital my body or my consent."

Eirwen’s twelve Shards rotated faster as roots reached toward the Watcher, filling the air with pressure that made the wagons creak.

Hajin’s fingers closed around the Chain case, but Ferra caught the movement and said, "Keep it closed, because the gate is testing whether Eirwen’s witness can hold without your force."

Eirwen placed both palms on the root bridge and said, "I vouch for the Watcher as a living person, and for Hajin as the socket’s holder rather than its owner."

The pressure increased, and Eirwen’s first six Shards dimmed while six deeper lights answered from inside the capital.

Roots opened wide enough for the wagons, though they shifted without bowing as if admitting a difficult truth rather than celebrating a returning favorite.

Separate witness lines formed along each wagon wheel, so the gate received twelve accounts instead of one command made larger by light.

After entry, the lines remained as passage marks rather than permissions while the root road changed shape and prevented an easy return to the Crown route.

Eirwen crossed first, and the pale bridges brightened beneath her feet as the inner guard stations watched without raising weapons.

A young guard looked toward Hajin’s closed Rings and whispered, "Is that the Lord who broke the mountain, or the guest who refused to show it?"

The captain answered, "He’s the guest who kept his power closed while Eirwen spoke, so record the difference before repeating a title."

Juna heard them and said, "That sentence can travel faster than the husband story if you repeat it loudly enough."

The captain bowed to Eirwen before declaring, "High Envoy, the inner Court receives your party under your witness, and the guest lattice remains open until each traveler chooses."

Eirwen inclined her head and replied, "Open it for the children first, because they shouldn’t need to explain a history they don’t own."

The demon child crossed with Elina beside her, and no root touched her skin or demanded a name.

Ash followed the Watcher with one hand around her finger and the other around Hajin’s sleeve.

Hajin watched the children pass and thought, ’The gate admitted them without demanding history,’ keeping his voice low, ’which is more mercy than most courts manage.’

Didi entered next without raising the Crown seal, while Hajin crossed last with the sealed socket and quiet Rings beneath his skin.

The living wall closed behind them, but pale light remained along the road and marked the party’s passage for any witness who returned.

Eirwen looked back at the gate and said, "The capital knows every traveler now, but knowing isn’t the same as approving."

Hajin answered, "Approval can wait until it learns what we chose, because passage already gave it enough to record."

Twelve Shards settled around Eirwen’s shoulders, and the Alder capital opened its inner road.
