Seraphina’s POV
I watched Blackwood’s expression shift, the concern deepening in his weathered features. "You possess tremendous power, Seraphina. More than any individual should wield."
My chin lifted slightly. "That power saved my pack and liberated the spirits of countless wolves."
Blackwood nodded slowly. "We acknowledge this truth. Your actions against Jasper removed a malignant force from our world. However..."
The silence stretched between them like a taut wire. I felt the weight of every gaze in the room.
"However what?" Julian’s voice cut through the tension. He moved closer, his fingers interlacing with mine. The protective energy radiating from him was palpable, a shield against the mounting pressure.
"The Council operates under ancient laws," Blackwood continued. "Such immense power threatens the delicate equilibrium we’ve maintained for centuries. When one pack possesses a White Wolf, what prevents them from dominating all others? What safeguards exist against tyranny?"
My wolf stirred restlessly within me. "I harbor no desire for conquest. Peace with my family is all I seek."
Another Alpha stepped forward, his face hard with suspicion. "Those words echo through history, spoken by every would-be conqueror. Power corrupts. It breeds ambition and hunger."
The accusation struck deep. My wolf snarled internally, bristling at the implication of greed when I had sacrificed everything for this pack’s survival.
Julian’s voice rumbled like approaching thunder. "My mate poses no threat to anyone. She is this pack’s salvation. Any attempt to punish her strength will meet my resistance."
Blackwood raised his hands in a placating gesture. "Today brings no punishment. We’ve come to transport Jasper and Cordelia to the high prison, where they await trial."
His attention shifted to the waiting warriors. "Retrieve the prisoners."
The cell doors groaned open. Heavy silver chains clinked as they secured the captives. Jasper remained silent, but Cordelia’s desperate pleas echoed off the stone walls as they dragged her toward the stairs. No one acknowledged her cries.
The procession moved through the main hall. Fang members lined the shadows, their eyes following the Council’s every movement. Tension crackled in the air. I noticed my warriors’ hands hovering near weapons. Their loyalty to me was absolute now, their readiness to fight evident in every stance.
At the front entrance, Blackwood paused. His gaze swept over the assembled wolves before settling on me.
"The prisoners will face justice," he declared. "But Seraphina... the Council’s attention remains fixed on you. Soon, we convene to evaluate your position. The question of whether a White Wolf may lead unsupervised requires careful consideration."
My heart plummeted. Supervision. They wanted to treat me like a dangerous criminal simply because of my strength.
"I am this pack’s Luna," I stated firmly. "I require no oversight."
Blackwood’s expression remained neutral, but fear flickered in his eyes. "That remains to be determined."
The sight of that fear sent a chill through me. A frightened Alpha was unpredictable, dangerous.
The Council members filed into their black vehicles, taking the dark presence of Jasper and Cordelia with them. Yet they left behind a different kind of shadow, one that would linger long after their departure.
Julian’s arms encircled me from behind, his warmth a comfort against the cold reality we now faced. "Ignore their words. They’re merely old men terrified of progress."
"They intend to separate us, Julian." My whisper barely carried on the evening air. "I can sense their plans."
His embrace tightened. "They will never succeed. I would watch the world burn before allowing them to harm you."
I leaned into his solid presence, drawing strength from his unwavering support.
Suddenly, Elena and Theo burst from the packhouse, their laughter cutting through the heavy atmosphere. The Council’s departure and the lingering magic meant nothing to them. Only their play mattered.
"Mommy! Look what I discovered!" Theo’s small hand clutched a gleaming pebble, his face bright with excitement.
I dropped to my knees, pulling both children into my embrace. Their innocent faces reminded me of what truly mattered. The Council could threaten and scheme, but these precious lives depended on my strength.
I had to endure. Not just for Julian’s sake, not solely for the pack’s welfare. My children deserved a future where they wouldn’t fear their own gifts, where power wouldn’t be seen as a curse but as a blessing to be wielded with wisdom.
The path ahead would be treacherous, filled with political maneuvering and ancient prejudices. But as I held Elena and Theo close, breathing in their sweet scent, I felt my resolve crystallize. The White Wolf within me pulsed with quiet determination.
They could watch me. They could judge me. They could fear my power.
But they would not break me. Not when so much depended on my standing firm against the storm that was coming.
The Council had made their position clear. Now I would make mine equally unmistakable.
