Roxanne’s POV
I lifted my gaze to meet his, desperate for the warmth of his embrace. Every fiber of my being craved the security of his arms, the reassurance that I wouldn’t face this darkness alone. "Julian means nothing to me now, Caleb. I swear on everything sacred. There’s no jealousy left in my heart. When I see them together, I feel genuine happiness. It took me years to understand, but I finally accept that he was never meant to be mine."
Caleb remained motionless, his arms firmly crossed against his chest. "I’m relieved to hear that, Roxanne. Genuinely. I’m happy you’ve discovered inner peace. But that doesn’t erase the years you spent trying to tear down the woman I hold in the highest regard."
"I understand completely," I whispered, rising to my feet. My hand extended toward him instinctively, but I caught myself before making contact with his arm. "I’m fully aware of the horrible things I’ve done. I know I was the monster in this story. But I’ve transformed, Caleb. Please, really look at me. See what I’m accomplishing now. This pack matters to me. Seraphina matters to me."
"Does she really?" Caleb’s voice cut through the night air like a blade. His eyes held an unforgiving hardness. "Because Seraphina isn’t just someone I care about—she’s family to me. Not as a mate, but as the sister of my soul. She represents everything good in this world. I would sacrifice my life for her without hesitation. I made a vow long ago that I would never allow a woman into my heart who could bring her harm. I refuse to be someone’s consolation prize or the backup plan after the Alpha rejected them."
His words sliced through me with surgical precision. Each syllable was a dagger finding its mark. Yet I knew I had earned every ounce of this pain through years of terrible choices.
"I’m not asking you to erase my past," I replied, surprised by the steadiness that had returned to my voice. "I’m begging for the opportunity to make amends. I’m asking you to see who Roxanne really is underneath all that bitterness. Not the envious girl consumed by resentment, but the woman determined to become worthy of forgiveness."
I drew in a shaking breath, gathering every ounce of courage I possessed.
"Seraphina is my sister now," I declared with complete sincerity. "Not just in words, but in my heart. I love her deeply. Her happiness is precious to me. Never again will I be the source of her pain. I wasted decades consumed by jealousy over everything she possessed, but now I understand I have my own destiny to pursue. And every instinct tells me that destiny includes you."
Caleb studied my face with an intensity that made my soul feel exposed. The silence stretched between us like a chasm, filled only by the whisper of wind through ancient trees and the haunting call of a distant wolf. My entire future hung in the balance of whatever words would come next.
"I desperately wanted to despise you," Caleb confessed, his voice rough with suppressed emotion. "I convinced myself the moon goddess had made some cosmic error. I searched for another woman who could fill this void. But it was impossible. Even during your cruelest moments, even when you were destroying everything beautiful around you, it was always you calling to my soul."
His hand finally moved, reaching out to cradle my cheek with infinite tenderness. His palm was warm and slightly calloused, and the instant our skin connected, pure lightning coursed through my entire being. I couldn’t suppress the soft sound that escaped my lips as I melted into his touch.
"I’ve been missing you my whole life," I breathed, though we had never truly been together.
"I’ve been waiting right here," he replied simply.
"Please, Caleb," I pleaded, my voice breaking with vulnerability. "Grant me this chance. Grant us this possibility. I don’t crave power or titles anymore. All I want is you. I want to become the woman who deserves to stand beside you."
Caleb searched my eyes deeply. I witnessed the internal war raging within him—his unwavering loyalty to Seraphina battling against the agony of our separation. But then I saw something else breaking through: love. The profound, unshakeable love that binds true mates together.
"This path won’t be simple, Roxanne," he warned with grave seriousness. "I won’t tolerate any regression into your former patterns. If you betray Seraphina again, if you bring harm to this pack, I will walk away without looking back. I will never choose you over their wellbeing."
"I wouldn’t want you to," I assured him with complete honesty. "I want to be part of the solution. I want to become someone you feel proud to call your partner."
Caleb released a deep, weary sigh. The rigid tension finally melted from his powerful shoulders. He reached out with both arms, drawing me against his chest with such fierce intensity that I could feel his heartbeat thundering against my ribs.
I pressed my face into the curve of his neck and let the tears flow freely. But these weren’t tears of sorrow—they were tears of pure relief washing over me. I had found my home at last. No more fighting for a throne that was never meant to be mine. My rightful place was here, safe within my mate’s protective embrace.
"Alright," Caleb murmured against my hair. "We can explore this possibility together. We can discover where this connection leads us."
I pulled back just enough to meet his gaze directly. "Thank you, Caleb. I swear you won’t regret giving me this opportunity."
His eyes dropped to my lips before returning to hold my stare. "You’ve already begun making things right, Roxanne. Just continue on this path."
He lowered his head and claimed my mouth with his own. This kiss bore no resemblance to the fantasies I once harbored about Julian. Those imagined moments were always about dominance and ego. This kiss was about two souls recognizing each other. It was deep, raw, and brimming with unspoken promises. I felt every shattered fragment of my existence finally being made whole.
When we separated, the moon had climbed even higher into the star-scattered sky. Everything felt fundamentally different now. I was no longer Roxanne the antagonist. No longer Roxanne the jealous sister consumed by bitterness.
And for the first time in my existence, being simply myself was absolutely perfect.
