You really shouldn’t tempt fate. It always comes back to bite you.
The next day after class, just as Shen Yi was rushing off to book a plane ticket to the South for the end of the month, a girl blocked his path.
The girl was also from the Computer Science department. As usual, there were very few women in the department, but this particular girl was also very pretty. She had permed, curly hair—a style she somehow managed to pull off.
She was a sophomore named Xu Wei, the belle of the Computer Science department.
Xu Wei gazed at the handsome young man before her. She pursed her lips and offered him the cake box she was holding.
"Shen Yi, I made this cake myself. Would you like to try some?"
The surrounding students instantly started jeering and whistling. It couldn’t be helped. Men already far outnumbered women in their department, and Xu Wei happened to be the department belle.
She was pretty, poised, and smart. Rumor had it she also came from a well-off family. Who wouldn’t be interested in a girl like that?
Well, someone wasn’t.
So, Shen Yi replied with his typical clueless-guy bluntness, "What, is your family in the cake business?"
"What?" Miss Xu faltered.
Shen Yi continued, "Sorry, my family’s in the apparel business, so I’m not really interested in the food industry at the moment. If there’s nothing else, please step aside. I need to go have a meal with my girlfriend."
At his words, Xu Wei’s hand trembled, and she nearly dropped the cake.
Some of the guys nearby couldn’t bear to watch. ’Come on, Shen Yi,’ they thought. ’It’s one thing not to be interested in Miss Xu, but you don’t have to be so cruel about it.’
Did Xu Wei not know Shen Yi had a girlfriend? Of course she did. After all, Shen Yi was constantly dedicating songs to Qin Jiao on the campus radio station.
But he was handsome, smart, and incredibly wealthy. On top of all that, he was exceptionally thoughtful and devoted to his girlfriend. What woman wouldn’t be tempted by a man like that?
And so, Miss Xu had been tempted, which led to the scene unfolding today.
People nearby rushed over to comfort her, while Shen Yi strode quickly toward the cafeteria to meet up with Qin Jiao.
A male classmate walking with him to the cafeteria said in a low voice, "Shen Yi, that was way too harsh. I think I saw Miss Xu’s eyes turning red back there."
Shen Yi asked, "Why would her eyes be red?"
The classmate replied, "Because you were so ruthless, of course! She clearly admires you and even went out of her way to bake you a cake. Do you have any idea how many guys in our department would kill for a cake she made?"
Shen Yi said, "If you guys want it, go ask her for it. I don’t. Nothing anyone else makes tastes as good as my Jiao Jiao’s cooking."
The classmate felt like this conversation was going nowhere. He was about to say something more—that she was a girl, after all, and he could have at least spared her feelings—but just then, he spotted a beautiful girl standing at the cafeteria entrance.
The girl’s long hair was tied back in a simple ponytail. She wore no makeup, but with her fair skin and striking features, she was instantly more stunning than any of the girls who did.
Dressed in just a beige, utility-style trench coat with black pants and black boots, she exuded an effortless sort of class.
The classmate immediately shut his mouth.
’If I had a girlfriend that beautiful and outstanding,’ he thought, ’I probably wouldn’t be eating Miss Xu’s cake either.’
Not wanting to stick around for the inevitable public display of affection, he quickly scurried away with the others.
Shen Yi had already walked up to her, a smile instantly appearing on his face. "Jiao Jiao, what are you in the mood for today? The sweet and sour pork ribs from window two, or the braised chicken with potatoes from window five?"
"You’re the one who wants those, aren’t you?"
"I want to eat them with my Jiao Jiao."
Qin Jiao was speechless. He was being so sappy. She gave him a light punch and told him to hurry up and get their food.
Qin Jiao went to save them a table while Shen Yi ran off to buy their dishes. They had been together for so long now that even their tastes in food were nearly identical.
