Chapter 454: Overstimulated

Seraphina's POV

I arrived at the Varynthia general market, and just from the market entrance alone, I was already overstimulated. The moment I stepped out of the car and my eyes landed on the wide, open space ahead, filled with movement, color, and noise, I felt something inside me tighten instantly. It was like my senses were being pulled in a hundred different directions at once, and I almost couldn't process what I was seeing fast enough.

There were rows and rows of stalls stretching out as far as I could see, each one filled with items I didn't recognize, and people, so many people, moving around, talking loudly, laughing, bargaining, and shouting over one another. It felt like the entire kingdom had decided to gather in one place, and I was just standing there at the edge of it, completely out of place.

For a brief moment, I genuinely questioned my own decision. I almost couldn't believe I thought someone like me, someone who struggled to even make eye contact with strangers sometimes, could walk into a place like this and start conversations as if it were nothing. The thought alone made my chest feel tight, and I swallowed nervously, my fingers curling slightly at my sides as I stood frozen. I could barely even imagine walking through the market without getting lost, much less talking to anyone and asking questions about something as sensitive as the Ashwyn family.

I slowly turned back toward the driver, who was still standing by the car, watching me with what looked like mild amusement on his face. It didn't take a genius to see that I was completely overwhelmed, and honestly, I didn't even try to hide it. The panic was probably written all over my face, and before I could even think of asking, he spoke first, offering to walk through the market with me so I wouldn't lose my way. I didn't hesitate. I nodded almost immediately, not even bothering to act like I had this under control.

"I would appreciate it," I said, my voice quieter than I intended, but I didn't have the energy to correct it.

He let out a small chuckle, not in a mocking way, but more like he had expected this reaction from the start. Then he moved ahead of me, gesturing for me to follow him as he began walking toward the entrance of the market. "Just stay close," he said over his shoulder. "And try not to look too nervous. If you look out of place, the vendors will swarm you."

That didn't help, not at all.

I nodded anyway, even though I was already on the verge of hyperventilating, and we hadn't even properly stepped into the market yet. My feet felt heavier with every step I took behind him, but I forced myself to keep moving. Turning back now would mean admitting that I couldn't even handle this, and as much as a part of me desperately wanted to retreat back to the safety of the hotel, I knew I couldn't afford to do that.

'Just suck it up,' I told myself. 'Be a big girl.'

The moment we crossed into the market fully, everything became louder. The voices, the sounds of things being moved around, the occasional burst of laughter, and the calls of vendors trying to get people's attention, it all hit me at once, and I had to focus on my breathing so I wouldn't lose it right there. I stayed close behind the driver, almost like he was the only thing anchoring me in place, and as I walked, I tried to take in my surroundings despite how overwhelming it all felt.

The first thing I noticed was how different everything looked compared to Aldoria or even Elmeria. The people here dressed in a way that felt both free and deeply rooted in their traditions at the same time. Their clothes were bright, flowing, detailed in ways I couldn't fully describe, and many of them had patterns that seemed to carry meaning I didn't understand. Some wore jewelry that shined way too much under the sunlight, others had markings or accessories that made them stand out even more, and for a moment, despite everything, I found myself watching them in fascination.

It was… beautiful, and so different from what I was used to.

I must have gotten too distracted, because the next thing I knew, I walked straight into someone.

The impact was small, but enough to snap me out of my thoughts instantly. I stumbled back slightly, my heart jumping as the person I had bumped into turned toward me with a glare. "Watch where you're going," they snapped, clearly annoyed.

"I'm sorry," I said quickly, my voice rushed as I stepped aside, lowering my gaze immediately.

But it didn't end there. As I tried to move forward again, I ended up brushing against someone else, earning another irritated look, and by the time I managed to fully steady myself, the driver was already a few steps ahead, completely caught up in the flow of the market. Panic flared in my chest as I realized I was starting to lose sight of him, and without thinking, I rushed forward, trying to catch up with him before I got completely swallowed by the crowd.

"Wait," I called out softly, though my voice was barely loud enough to be heard over everything else.

I pushed through the moving bodies as carefully as I could, my heart pounding as I kept my eyes locked on his back, afraid that if I lost him, I wouldn't find my way out again. My steps quickened, almost turning into a light jog as I tried to keep up, my focus entirely on not losing the only person I knew here, and then…

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something, or rather, someone.

I slowed down almost instantly, my steps faltering as something about that silhouette caught my attention. It was familiar in a way that made my chest tighten again, but this time for a completely different reason. For a second, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, that maybe I was just imagining things because of everything that had been on my mind since yesterday, but I couldn't ignore it.

I stopped walking completely, my breath catching slightly as I turned my head toward the direction I had seen it. My eyes searched through the crowd, trying to find that same figure again, and for a moment, all I saw were strangers moving around, their faces blending into one another.

Then I saw them. Two figures, standing a short distance away, partially turned away from me but still close enough for me to see their faces when they shifted slightly, and my heart stopped because I knew those faces.

There was no mistake. Even in a place this crowded, even in a place I had never been before, I would recognize them anywhere.

The realization hit me so suddenly that I forgot where I was for a moment, forgot about the noise, the crowd, everything. All I could focus on was them, standing there like they weren't supposed to be here, like I wasn't supposed to be seeing them right now.

My fingers curled slightly at my sides again, my breathing uneven as I stared, trying to process what I was looking at, trying to make sense of how this was even possible because there was no doubt about it anymore.

What I had seen, what I had heard, it wasn't in my head, and it wasn't a mistake.

Standing right there, in the middle of the Varynthia general market, were the two familiar faces that confirmed exactly what I had desperately wanted to confirm.
