In the darkness

I reached out for the doorknob after I crawled out from underneath my covers, emerging like a butterfly from a cocoon, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. As my warm feet hit the cold floor, I got shivers that send chills up my spine. I shook off the chills and drag my weary body to the steep staircase. Ascending those dreadful stairs is a struggle.

I cautiously looked down the stairs into the inky blackness below. Biting my lip, I started to make my way down the stairs. The light switch is at

the bottom. I looked behind me, one last peek of light before I carried on descending the stairs into the unknown. I stepped down from step

to step cautiously. Each step dragged me further into the darkness and further away from the

safety of the light.

I reached the bottom of the stairs. I ran my hands along the wall, my fingers seeking the light switch. Flick! Light... Reassurance. A quick few

strides across to the door. I hastily

bolted the door. I turned to the right,

facing the open window. A gust of

wind swirled around me, enveloping

me with cold air and making the hair on

my skin stand on end under protruding goosebumps, with one hesitant step, I entered the hallway.

Another step. The floor was cold under my bare feet, like marble.

Another step. Everything smelled strongly of disinfectant and bleach, like a hospital. It was three in the morning. It seemed like the whole

world was sleeping but me. The silence was sinister. I felt the weight of the darkness pushing on me. My mind darted from one nightmare

scenario to the next, the fear of the unknown overwhelmed me and I was paranoid about vicious intrusions. My eyes darted around

the room, hunting for anything different, any dark silhouettes lurking in the darkness. I failed to

find anything out of the ordinary.

It was pitch black and I couldn't a thing in front of me which was quite scary because I don't what is waiting for me in the darkness. I decided to move forward and don't look around if I don't see Anything it won't hurt me.

I took a few strides to get inside the kitchen. I quickly turned on the lights and felt much better.

I take out the coffee pot from the cabinet and filled it with tap water and placed it on flame I was waiting for it to boil but all of a sudden, I heard footsteps approaching me from behind and I reacted immediately and found a knife in the drawer and I took it.

As the footsteps got closer and closer so do my heartbeat getting faster and faster by each second and I was praying to not make hurt jasper. I clutch the knife to my chest ready to protect myself from harm.

And one swift motion, I swirl around and saw it was Benny. He raised his arm in the air.

" Don't attack me! it's me! It's me! He said, looking terrified while looking at the knife in my hand.

" What in the world are you doing here? you have scared the life out of me." I asked him.

" What are you doing here at this time?"

" First answer my question then I will answer you."

" Did you forget? Ma'am made me the in charge. I was on the route and saw the kitchen lights were on so I came to check who was inside and find you."

I place the knife on the counter and said, " I was making coffee for myself because I can't sleep."

" Why you can't sleep? And you shouldn't be walking around the house at this time. It's dangerous."

I turned to face the stove again and I reconsider his words. And I thought, how he knew that it was dangerous.

" What do you mean by dangerous?" I asked him and he didn't say anything he just went silent.

My heart beating so fast and I can see from the corner of my the knife on the counter. And before I could retrieve that Benny took it before me.

" What is that for? are you expecting someone beside me?"

" No, I wasn't expecting anyone."

" Don't lie to me! you have been expecting Jasper."

I turned to look at him and he was smirking like a maniac and I knew, it was a bad idea to not listen to Jasper. Benny was fidgeting with the knife between his fingers.

" I don't know what are you talking about," I reply and tried to hide my fear under the layers of confidence. I glanced over his shoulder and saw the way out of the kitchen but Benny was blocking the way.

" Come on, Aisling we both know what we are talking about. You know my brother has a weakness. He too kind for someone like you but I am nothing like him."
