Chapter 328:Training.

The weeks passed quietly.

Long before the capital awoke each morning, the palace training grounds echoed with the rhythmic sounds of steel meeting steel.

Atheline stood in the center of the courtyard with his sword resting comfortably in his hand. Across from him, Lilith slowly lowered into her stance, her dark blade reflecting the first rays of dawn.

The instant their eyes met, they moved. Steel collided with a sharp clang that echoed throughout the empty courtyard. Their movements flowed naturally.

Every strike tested the other’s guard, searching for even the smallest opening before immediately being answered by another precise counter.

Atheline stepped forward with a diagonal slash before seamlessly transitioning into a thrust.

Lilith caught the first strike and twisted her wrist, redirecting the second just enough for the blade to pass harmlessly beside her shoulder.

She responded with a quick cut aimed toward his side. He pivoted on instinct. Their swords separated only to meet again a heartbeat later.

The exchange continued without either of them speaking. To an outsider, the duel would have looked almost graceful, but beneath that elegance lay countless hours of experience.

After several minutes, they stepped back simultaneously.

She lowered her sword first.

"Again."

He smiled.

"I thought you’d say that."

Their second exchange was noticeably faster. The distance between them disappeared in an instant. Their blades flashed repeatedly as they circled one another beneath the morning sky.

Lilith deliberately varied her rhythm, refusing to establish a predictable pattern. Sometimes she attacked relentlessly, and other times she waited, forcing him to commit first.

Atheline adapted naturally. He combined instinct with patience.

Rather than chasing every opportunity, he waited for the right one. Eventually, her blade slipped through his guard just enough to touch his shoulder.

She smiled faintly.

"You’re hesitating less."

"So are you."

"I never hesitated."

"You did, you always treat me like some sort of glass."

"When?"

"Almost every single fight."

She looked genuinely thoughtful.

"...Perhaps, but you are weaker than I."

Neither considered the exchange a victory. They simply sheathed their practice swords before beginning the next part of their routine.

The center of the courtyard had long since been reinforced for magical training.

Large stone pillars surrounded the area, each covered in countless scorch marks, frozen patches, and deep cracks accumulated over years of use.

Atheline walked toward the center. He slowly closed his eyes. Aether flowed quietly through his body.

Unlike before, he no longer sought to unleash overwhelming power, instead... He concentrated on control.

A gentle breeze formed around him. Wind gathered first.

Moments later, streams of water emerged from the surrounding air, spiraling alongside the current without disturbing its flow.

Finally, thin strands of lightning appeared. Blue arcs danced between the water currents before disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared.

The three elements moved together. Not perfectly, but far more smoothly than they had several weeks ago.

Lilith observed silently.

She could immediately see the difference. His Aether consumption had decreased. The transitions between each element had become almost effortless. Rather than forcing the affinities together, he allowed each to naturally support the others.

The currents remained stable for nearly a full minute before gradually dispersing.

He opened his eyes.

"Better."

She nodded.

"Noticeably."

He looked toward the fading wind.

"It still feels..." He searched for the right words. "...rough around the edges."

"It will."

She stepped beside him.

"Your core contains six elements or even more. Few people in history have ever needed to balance that many. There isn’t a book that can teach you. You’ll simply have to continue refining it."

He smiled.

"I expected that answer."

The following days continued much the same. Their mornings belonged to training. Atheline had managed to widdle his way into her training.

Their afternoons belonged to the kingdom and their evenings belonged to each other. The routine never became dull; instead, it slowly became comforting.

Each sunrise brought another opportunity to improve, even if only by a small amount. Atheline gradually discovered that tiny refinements accumulated surprisingly quickly.

His elemental transitions became cleaner, his control became steadier, and most importantly... his Core no longer felt unfamiliar. It had finally begun to feel like part of him.

Lilith also continued refining her own abilities. Unlike her husband, whose training focused on control, she concentrated almost entirely on precision.

Every shadow she created appeared exactly where she intended. Every teleport consumed slightly less Aether than before. Every movement became quieter and more efficient.

Watching her train was strangely mesmerizing. Darkness seemed less like an element and more like an extension of her body.

Occasionally... She reminded him not to become too comfortable.

One morning, while he concentrated on maintaining three flowing elements at once, a ripple passed through the shadows beneath his feet.

Instinct reacted before conscious thought. He immediately shifted sideways. Lilith emerged from the darkness exactly where he had been standing.

She nodded approvingly.

"Good."

"I almost had you."

"You almost did, fuck you scared me a little there."

He looked down at the shadow beneath him.

"I didn’t even sense the Aether."

"You weren’t supposed to."

She calmly disappeared once again. A moment later, she appeared behind him. He turned instantly. Their practice swords met before either could fully attack.

She smiled.

"Better."

He laughed.

"I suppose breakfast will have to wait for another hour."

Not all of their mornings were spent together. Occasionally, palace affairs required one of them to leave early. On those days, the other simply continued training alone.

Atheline often chose the palace’s outer gardens. The peaceful surroundings allowed him to focus entirely on his elemental control and feel the sun.

Nearby streams became convenient sources of water. Gentle spring winds naturally assisted his affinity. Even the surrounding trees proved useful when practicing precise control without damaging them.

Instead of shattering branches with lightning, he challenged himself to strike only individual leaves. Instead of freezing entire ponds, he froze only the surface before melting it moments later. Instead of creating powerful gusts, he guided falling petals through the air.

Small exercises, yet every successful attempt represented another step forward.

The fox, naturally, refused to be left behind. Every morning, it followed the couple from their chambers to the training grounds.

At first, she merely watched, curled comfortably beneath a nearby tree. Her blue eyes followed every movement with remarkable concentration.

Eventually, watching no longer satisfied her. The little fox began running around the perimeter of the courtyard while the two trained.

Sometimes she chased butterflies, other times stalked birds with exaggerated seriousness, and occasionally, she attempted to pounce on falling leaves, only to tumble clumsily across the grass after missing completely.

Atheline laughed every single time.

"She thinks she’s hunting."

Lilith watched the tiny creature launch herself toward another unsuspecting butterfly.

"She is, poorly though."

The fox landed face-first in the grass. She stood back up with complete dignity, pretending nothing had happened. Neither of them could suppress their smiles.
