The realization changed everything. Those ancient markers had never been guiding travelers; they had been marking a boundary.
Something was enclosed within them, or perhaps something was being prevented from entering.
Before experimenting further, they decided to map the entire area. Atheline placed small stones at regular intervals while reinforcing each with Earth. Unlike ordinary markers, these could not easily be moved by beasts or weather.
Lilith added her own touch. Each stone received a tiny fragment of Dark Aether hidden beneath its shadow. She would immediately know if one disappeared.
Hours passed as they walked. Together they walked every possible direction and every single one... Returned to the same circle; not once did their markers vanish. Instead, the forest itself quietly redirected them.
There was no moment where reality shifted. One moment they were walking toward a distant hill and the next, the stone circle stood before them once again.
Atheline frowned.
"I’ve been watching the sun all morning, and this time, it never changes."
Lilith looked upward.
"It does, only not enough to notice."
They were losing time without noticing how.
Determined to understand the illusion, Atheline changed tactics. He slung his bow over one shoulder before raising both hands toward the sky.
"Okay, let’s try this again."
Wind Aether gathered around him again. Moments later, countless invisible currents rushed outward in every direction. The wind climbed through the canopy before spreading across the surrounding wilderness.
He closed his eyes.
A few minutes later, his eyes snapped open.
"It’s still the same as yesterday. How about you try again? You might notice something we didn’t."
Lilith immediately nodded. She extended one hand and darkness flowed outward once more. Her shadows spread beneath every tree, every root, every stone.
Unlike the previous day, she wasn’t searching for hidden enemies. The shadows reached the invisible boundary, then, without resistance, they simply... Changed direction.
Lilith withdrew her magic. Her expression grew thoughtful.
"It’s still the same; the forest isn’t forcing us away."
Atheline nodded slowly.
"It’s changing our perception."
"No."
She shook her head.
"If it were only perception, my shadows would know."
He frowned.
"Then what?"
She looked toward the surrounding forest.
"It rejects intention."
Silence followed. The more they considered those words, the more everything made sense. The moment they intentionally tried reaching the unknown destination, the forest gently guided them elsewhere.
Atheline sat upon one of the ancient stones.
"So the harder we push, the stronger it redirects us."
Lilith nodded.
"We’ve been treating it like an enemy. Perhaps it isn’t."
He looked toward the weathered pillars once more.
"You think it’s a gate."
"I do, and mast gates aren’t meant to be broken through by force."
Neither ruler spoke for several minutes; instead, they carefully observed the stone circle itself. Every pillar faced inward, and every carving pointed toward the center, almost... As though whoever built this place had expected visitors to arrive here first, not stumble across it accidentally.
Atheline stood.
"What if we’ve been standing on the wrong side?"
Lilith looked toward him. He smiled faintly.
"We’ve spent a lot of time trying to force our way through. What if... it expects permission?"
The idea sounded almost absurd, yet nothing else had worked. Rather than pouring overwhelming Aether into the pillars, they began studying the carvings carefully.
Hours passed.
Each groove varied slightly, tiny differences, almost impossible to notice. Until Lilith suddenly stopped.
"They’re sequential."
Atheline immediately walked over. She pointed toward the first crescent.
"The carvings continue from one pillar... to the next like pieces of an enormous puzzle scattered across the entire circle. When viewed individually... They meant nothing," she paused, pointing at another pillar," they formed one complete pattern.
Slowly but methodically, the two began walking from pillar to pillar following the sequence. At each stone, Lilith allowed only the smallest thread of Dark Aether to flow into the carved channels.
It was only enough to awaken the ancient craftsmanship, and the carvings responded, only with the faintest silver glow.
Atheline followed behind her. Whenever one sequence ended, he gently guided Wind into the next pillar. The breeze carried the energy naturally from one marker to another.
Neither tried overpowering the structure; instead... They simply completed it. The circle awakened one stone at a time, until all seven were awakened.
Silence settled across the forest; even the breeze stopped. The little fox stared wide-eyed at the center of the clearing. Nothing happened at first.
Then the air calmly shimmered; the scenery before them rippled gently like the surface of a perfectly still lake disturbed by a single falling leaf.
The trees ahead became blurry, then clear again and then blurry once more. Atheline took one cautious step forward, and the ripple expanded. The world itself seemed to breathe.
Lilith watched quietly.
"...It’s opening."
He took another step. This time, the forest ahead looked different. The trees stood in slightly different positions, the light filtering through the canopy had changed, and the air smelled sweeter.
Neither of them had moved far, yet something fundamental had shifted. The invisible wall that had rejected every attempt to advance... Had quietly withdrawn.
Atheline looked back. The stone circle remained exactly where it had always been; nothing about it appeared extraordinary anymore.
Lilith stepped beside him.
"We didn’t destroy the illusion."
"No."
He smiled.
"We just answered its question, and it opened."
Together they crossed the unseen threshold. There was no flash of light, sensation of teleportation, or distortion beneath their feet.
The ancient forest behind them faded into silence, and ahead, a new forest waited. At first glance, it looked almost identical, yet after only a few breaths... both rulers realized they had entered somewhere entirely different.
The Aether alone was enough to tell them. It was so rich that every breath felt invigorating, as though they were next to the world tree. The trees were larger and the flowers brighter.
The air carried a faint fragrance unlike anything either of them had experienced. Even the light filtering through the leaves possessed an almost ethereal quality.
Lilith slowly looked around.
"This..." she rarely found herself searching for words. "...has been preserved."
Atheline nodded.
"As though time... forgot this place."
Neither noticed the tiny lights drifting silently between the distant branches, nor the pair of curious eyes watching them from high within the canopy before vanishing without making the slightest sound.
