Chapter 182: I Went to Meet the Goddess Who Summoned Me and...

The east yard at midnight was empty and cold by nothing.

Soren crossed it to the pale patch, to Selah’s seal, to the coordinate that had been pre-filled on a festival slot before any committee drafted the fight he’d won to stand on it.

He stood on it now.

He understood, standing there, every path had run through this square.

The grave, the fight, the reception, the custody clause, the room assigned with this exact sightline.

Somebody had been walking him to this coordinate since before he’d set foot in this world, and here he was.

"Okay," Soren said, to the dark. "Audience."

The dark answered.

◆◆◆◆

It didn’t rush him.

It folded.

That was the word his mind reached for and kept.

The shadow across the yard folded inward, gathered, and did it with an analysis he’d been watching every single night for a year from under his own bed, the exact way Grimm’s shadow moved when she shifted in her sleep, the exact way Yara’s dark had arranged his corners all week.

He knew this shadow.

He’d slept on top of it every night since the first.

The folding gathered into a shape at the center of the seal, tall, patient. The shape resolved, and it resolved the whole way, no hiding left in it, done being careful, the ceiling finally big enough to hold the truth without killing the man it was told to.

White hair.

Wolf ears.

Pale skin, veins close under it.

And the eyes, when they opened, were the exact red the forum illustrations had argued about for three years, the red he woke up next to every morning, the red that had found him in a dream on night one and said I found you, I finally found you, master.

Yara.

Of course it was Yara.

It had always been Yara. The count had known for a week and declined to say it, and here it was, standing on the seal in the shape he loved, wearing the truth like it had never once bothered to hide it. Because it hadn’t. It had slept on his chest. It had called him master. It had held the door.

◆◆◆◆

"Hello, master," Yara said.

Her voice was the same.

That was the thing that landed.

Not a goddess’ voice, not a stranger’s, the same warm cracked voice that woke him up and stole his blankets and reorganized Maren’s heat corner for airflow.

"You’re the goddess who summoned me," Soren said.

"Yes."

"The one who opened the door."

"And held it." A small motion, almost shy, absurd on a thing that had folded the yard’s darkness like laundry. "You have no idea what it costs to hold a door for a soul the world is trying to reject. I held yours for a very long time, and I’d do it again, and I’d do it slower, so it lasted longer."

"You’ve been under my bed for a year."

"I like it under there. It’s close to you and nobody looks." Her red eyes did the thing they did, the worship and the appetite in the same look. "You told me to sit, once, our first night in that form. Do you remember? You told a goddess to sit on the floor away from Selah."

"You sat."

"I’d have done anything." Softer. "I still would. I’ve been doing exactly that since before you got here, master. You just couldn’t see the size of it until now."

"The dream, night one," Soren said. "You in the summoning room. ’I found you.’ That wasn’t a bond forming."

"That was me finishing." Her voice went quiet and pleased.

"I’d been looking through the veil for longer than you’d believe. Watching the other you. Thirty years old, tired, sharp, wasted on a world with no system in it. I wanted you the first time I saw you solve a problem nobody thanked you for."

"So you stole me."

"I rescued you. You were rotting there." No apology, none anywhere in her. "This world was going to grow me a hero and hand me a boy I didn’t want. I said no. I hollowed the boy out, brought you across, and set you where the hero would have stood, and then I taught you to be better than he ever would have been."

"Troy?"

"Troy’s fine. Troy got to be a person instead of a fate. He should thank me." Her ears flicked.

"Everyone I moved this year got a better story than the one they were assigned. Including you. Especially you."

Soren stood on the seal and ran the count, all of it, at his usual speed, and every unowned entry found its owner in the space of one breath.

The coordinate, pre-filled in a hand no office claimed.

Her hand.

The shell, funded on an account older than any office. Her account.

The chains, oiled on a schedule no office recorded, teaching a god-piece where to file. Her maintenance. Her god-piece. Her leash.

The year of right-sized crises, each one survivable, each one instructive, each one leaving him stronger, sequenced into a curriculum by someone who wanted him excellent and not destroyed.

Her curriculum.

The whole year. The whole world, maybe. The door, the anchor, the voice that said soon.

All of it, one hand, red eyes, standing on the grave she’d dug so he’d have something to win.

He’d told himself for a week the truth wasn’t ripe.

It was ripe now. It had fallen off the tree and landed on the seal and looked at him with a face he kissed every morning.

◆◆◆◆

"Say it plainly," Soren said. "All of it, in one sentence, so I can check it against my count."

Yara smiled, and it was the smile from the bed, the one with the appetite under it, except now he could see clean down to the bottom of it.

"I opened a door I was forbidden to open, poured you into a body I emptied to hold you, and then I spent a year building enemies to sharpen you, killing the ones who looked too close, and sleeping under your bed so I’d never miss a night of you, so the Goddess of Shadows that was meant for Troy choose you instead. That’s the whole of it."

She spread her hands, palms up, offering it.

"Everything that ever happened to you here, I did. The good and the bad and the graves. All of it was me. All of it was for you."

She tilted her head, red eyes bright, waiting for the reaction a confession like that was supposed to earn.

"You took your time asking for the meeting," Yara said. "I’ve been ready since the day I brought you."
