Yara was waiting at the seal when they got there, because of course she was.
"You got the notification," Selah said.
"I am the notification." Yara’s ears flicked. "Approximately."
"That’s not comforting."
"It wasn’t meant to be."

Selah stopped at the edge of the pale patch and looked at it.
"I sealed this," she said.
"You did."
"I knelt here for eleven minutes with my hands in it and my lips going blue, and I have not stood on it since."
"I know," said Yara. "I watched you avoid it for months. You take the long way around the yard. You’ve added four minutes to your walk every day since the reception."
Selah’s jaw moved. "That’s an unpleasant thing to have noticed."
"I notice everything about the people he keeps."
"Do you notice it about me specifically or about all of us?"
"All of you." Yara tilted her head. "You most, lately. You’re the only one who scares me."
Selah looked at her for a long moment.
"Good," she said.

Soren walked out onto the ice.
They both watched him do it, and neither followed until he was standing in the middle, on the exact coordinate, and turned around.
"Come here," he said.
"On the grave," said Selah.
"On the grave."
"Soren."
"This is the spot they picked for us." He held out both hands. "Committee put us here. Yara filed a monster loose under here. I stood on this square and got told my whole life was theater. Every bad thing this year has a return address and it’s this square."
"And your solution is to have sex on it."
"My solution," Soren said, "is to make it ours."
Selah exhaled through her nose.
Then she stepped onto the ice.

Yara came last, and she came differently.
The shadows of the east yard came with her. Every one of them, off the buildings and the walls and the dead grass, drawn in toward the seal until the three of them were standing in a black bowl with no light in it at all.
"Privacy," she said.
"That’s a lot of privacy."
"There are windows on four sides, master. I’m not sharing."
Selah kissed him first, which surprised both of the others.
"I asked out loud in the spring," she said against his mouth. "I’ve decided I like asking. It’s efficient."
"Is that what we’re calling it."
"I’m calling it efficient. You can call it whatever helps."
Yara laughed behind him and pressed against his back, and her hands came around his ribs, and the temperature in the bowl of shadow dropped and rose at the same time, cold on one side and something older than heat on the other.
Clothes went onto the ice.
Selah put frost down under them first, a smooth thick sheet, because Selah solved logistics before she solved anything else.
"You made a bed," Soren said.
"I made a surface. Don’t romanticize it."
"You put a border on it."
"I put a border on everything."
"An inch."
"An inch," Selah agreed, and did not elaborate, and the frost held its line exactly where she’d set it.
Yara went first and Selah let her, which was its own negotiation, conducted entirely in one look over his shoulder.
Yara sank down onto him slow, taking him all the way in until her hips met his. Her hands stayed flat on his chest. Her ears were back. Shadow slid over her skin like it was breathing with her.
"Mhhh... fuck," she breathed.
She started to move, rolling her hips in a steady rhythm, lifting up and dropping back down so he filled her every time.
"Ahh~yes~"
Soren’s hands found her waist. She rode him harder, the wet sound of it loud in the dark.
"Harder," she said, voice low. "Please~mhhh~"
He thrust up to meet her. Yara’s head tipped back.
"Ahh... like that... don’t stop~"
Selah watched for a long minute, eyes sharp. Then she stopped watching. She stepped in behind Yara, put her mouth on Yara’s throat, and slid one hand down over Yara’s stomach, pressing firm just above where their bodies joined. She did not go lower.
The goddess of shadows made a noise that nobody in three hundred years had heard.
"Oh~"
"Interesting," Selah said against her skin.
"Don’t~ahh~say interesting while you’re doing that~"
"I’m collecting data."
"Selah"
"Do you want me to stop collecting data?"
Yara’s hips jerked. "...No. Mhhh~keep~ahh~"
Selah’s teeth scraped the side of Yara’s neck. Her hand stayed on Yara’s stomach, steady pressure, nothing more. Yara rode Soren faster, wetter, the frost cracking under her palms.
"Harder~fuck~yes~"
She came hard, body locking up around him, a broken "ahh~mhhh~" spilling out of her while the shadow around them shivered.
They traded.
Yara climbed off, still breathing rough. Selah took her place without a word. She braced her legs on the ice she’d made, lined him up, and sank down in one clean motion until he was buried deep.
"Mhhh..."
She started to move right away. Yara stayed behind her, both arms wrapped around Selah’s ribs, holding her up.
"Look at that," Soren said. "Cooperation."
"Shut up," Selah said, but her voice was already starting to fray.
She rode him hard and steady, the wet slide of it loud.
"Ahh... there~"
Yara’s mouth brushed Selah’s shoulder. Selah’s rhythm stayed precise for a long time. Then it broke. Her hips snapped down harder.
"Harder~Soren~mhhh~"
He met her, thrusting up. Selah’s control slipped. A soft, sharp sound tore out of her.
"Ahh~fuck~yes~"
The frost went out from her in a ring across the whole east yard, a sheet of it under the shadow, and every fern and whorl of it stopped one clean inch from the edge of Yara’s shadow.
Perfect placement. Even coming apart.
Especially coming apart.
Selah came with a choked "mhhh~ahh~" and her whole body tight around him, the ice under them singing with the force of it.

"You still do it," Soren said afterward.
"Do what?"
"The inch."
Selah, flat on her back on her own ice with her eyes closed, said, "It’s not a lie anymore. It’s just how I am."
"I know," he said. "That’s why I like it."
She didn’t answer.
Her hand found his in the dark and stayed there, which from Selah was a paragraph.

[DING! — Joint recalibration complete.]
[DING! — Obsession Index: Yara Hale, Selah Young. Both values remain outside measurable band.]
[DING! — Soul integrity: stable. No drain recorded.]
No drain recorded.
He read that one three times.
Every alignment of his life had cost him. That was the whole mechanic. The system took its toll out of the middle of him and the pack put it back afterward, and the arithmetic never once came out at zero.
Tonight it came out at zero.
"Does it hold?" Selah asked. "Or does it hold only while nobody’s hiding anything new."
"That," said Yara, "is the smartest question anyone’s asked in two days."
"Answer it."
"It holds while it’s true. The second one of you starts keeping something again, he pays for it."
Selah filed that. Soren watched her file it.
"That’s new," he said.
"It’s the disclosure," Yara said, drowsy, draped across his legs. "There’s nothing being held anywhere in the wire anymore. Nobody’s spending anything hiding. The whole system’s running clean for the first time since I built it."
"That’s not how I’d have designed it."
"You didn’t design it, master. You just broke it in the useful direction."
◆◆◆◆
They lay in the bowl of shadow on a sheet of ice on a grave and nobody moved for a while.
Then Yara sat up.
Fast.
Soren felt it through the wire before he saw it, a hard cold spike down the shadow channel, and Selah’s eyes opened.
"Yara?"
Yara was looking down.
Not at them. Through the ice, through the seal, down at the dark under the east yard, and every shadow in the bowl went rigid at once.
"Get dressed," she said.
"What is it."
"Get dressed."
She was already on her feet, already reaching down through Selah’s ice with one hand, going in past the wrist like the seal wasn’t there.
"Yara, what’s wrong?"
"It’s quiet," Yara said.
"It’s been quiet for months. Selah’s plug holds, the well reads empty."
"No." Her hand came out of the ice.
She was holding a length of chain.
It ended in a clean, cold, unbroken loop.
Nothing had snapped it. Nothing had filed through it.
Something had simply slipped out of it, downward, and left it hanging.
"It’s empty," Yara said.
