Chapter 195: She Offered to Give Me My Old Life Back and I Said...

The offer came at dawn, or what the campus had instead of dawn now.

It came through the ice at the top of the stair, in the small cracked voice, and it was extremely reasonable.

That was what Soren had not prepared for.

He’d braced for a threat. He had a whole set of responses ready for a threat.

Thief, said the dark. Listen. I am not going to hurt you.

◆◆◆◆

"Don’t answer it," said Yara.

"Why not."

"Because she doesn’t lie. She’s never had to." Yara’s hands were locked around her own elbows. "Anything she says, she means, and she can do. That’s what makes her dangerous, master. She’s honest."

’She is correct,’ the dark agreed. ’Daughter, sit down. You are frightening the others.’

Yara sat down.

Instantly, on the concrete, halfway through deciding not to.

She looked at her own legs with an expression Soren had never seen on her.

"Get up," he said.

"I can’t."

"Yara."

"I can’t," she said, and her voice broke on it. "That’s what I’ve been trying to explain since the yard. When she speaks, I’m a wave being told what water does."

◆◆◆◆

Soren stood up off the step.

He looked at the ice at the top of the stair, and at the dark behind it, and put his hands in his pockets.

"Alright," he said. "You’ve got the floor. Make the offer."

Three parts, said the dark.

"Go."

My daughter returns to me. She goes back into the place she came out of and she stops being a shape with a name. That is not a punishment. It is a correction.

"That’s one."

The second. This world is repaired. The body you are wearing was grown for a boy. He was emptied to make room for a soul that does not belong in this world and has no root in it. I will put him back.

Soren’s hands stayed in his pockets.

"And me."

Third, said the dark, gently. You go home.

◆◆◆◆

The sublevel went very quiet.

"Say that part again," said Soren.

’You go home.’ The voice stayed small and patient. ’I have opened the wall of the world once tonight already, in order to speak to you. Opening it again is nothing. You would wake in your own bed, in your own body, at the hour my daughter took you. Thirty years old. Everything as it was.’

"Everything as it was," Soren repeated.

’You would remember none of this. There would be no grief in it. There is no cruelty in the offer, thief. It is a full restoration for everyone involved. The boy gets his life. You get yours. My daughter comes home.’

Behind Soren, Maren made a sound.

"Don’t," said Joan quietly. "Let him work."

◆◆◆◆

Soren stood in the sublevel and ran it in front of everyone, because there was no point pretending he wasn’t running it.

His own bed. His own body. Thirty years old, at the hour she’d taken him.

He’d been tired in that life. He remembered the specific quality of the tiredness better than he remembered the furniture. A man with a competence nobody had ever needed, solving problems nobody thanked him for, in a world with no system in it and no wire and nothing at the other end of any of it.

And no memory of this. That was the actual offer. Not a return. A deletion with a comfortable landing.

He’d wake up in that bed and be fine.

He’d be fine for the rest of his life and never know what he’d been asked to give up.

◆◆◆◆

"No," said Soren.

The dark waited.

’You did not consider it.’

"I considered all of it."

’It took you nine seconds.’

"I count fast."

’Thief.’ Still gentle. ’You are choosing to remain in a life that was manufactured for you by a creature who lied to you, you know this now. She told you herself.’

"She did."

’And you stay.’

"And I stay."

’Explain it,’ said the dark, and for the first time the small cracked voice had something in it that was not perfectly smooth.

"You want the reason?" Soren said. "Fine. It’s not a good one and I’m not going to dress it up."

He took his hands out of his pockets.

"That life was quiet and nothing in it ever needed me. This one is a disaster and six people in this stairwell would have to be dragged out of it. That’s the entire comparison. I’m not going back to a place where I was never necessary because you’ve offered me a soft landing and amnesia."

’You would not know the difference.’

"That’s the worst part of your offer, not the best." Soren looked up at the ice. "You’re offering to take it and make me okay with having lost it. You should have led with the threat. I’ve got a better answer for threats."

The dark was silent for a moment.

’You are very small,’ it said, ’and you have made a very large decision.’

"Yeah, well." Soren wiped the dried blood off his lip with his thumb. "It’s the only one on the table that’s mine."

◆◆◆◆

’The boy whose body you wear had a mother,’ said the dark.

Soren stopped.

"That’s better," he said. "That’s the first thing you’ve said that landed."

’It is not a tactic. It is an item on the account of what you are keeping.’

"I know exactly what I’m keeping." He kept his voice flat. "I’ve known since the first week. There’s a file on him and I’ve read it, and there’s nothing in it I can fix by walking out of his body now. You’d have to unwind a year of everyone in this stairwell to put him back and I’m not paying for a repair with six people."

The dark did not answer that.

He noted, for the count, that it was the only point all morning it declined to press.

He didn’t look at Yara.

He was aware, in the specific way you are aware of a fire in the room, that she had come up off the concrete at some point during the last thirty seconds and was standing behind his left shoulder, and that she had not said one word.

Then the system fired.

[DING! — Obsession Index: Yara Hale.]

[DING! — ...]

[DING! — ...]

Three notifications, and the second and third arrived with nothing in them.

Empty brackets.

Soren had seen this system produce a number for a mole’s approximate mood. He had never once seen it fail to fill a field.

[DING! — Value cannot be expressed. Scale abandoned. Obsession Index: Yara Hale, UNMEASURED.]

[DING! — Advisory: this entity is no longer being tracked as a variable.]

◆◆◆◆

The pressure behind the ice at the top of the stair changed.

Soren felt it come off him, all of it, that awful gentle attention lifting away and turning somewhere else, and every hair on his arms went up as it went.

Because the dark had stopped being interested in the thief.

Daughter, said the small cracked voice, and it was not gentle anymore.

What have you become up here?

Behind Soren’s left shoulder, Yara laughed.

It was quiet, and it was wet, and it was the single most frightening sound anyone in that stairwell had ever heard her make.

"Something you’ll have to come down and see," she said.
