Chapter 187: Queen’s Intimidation

Sylvara stepped over the threshold, her long silver hair catching the dim torchlight like spun glass.

She wore an emerald gown trimmed in pale gold, the pristine fabric pooling flawlessly against the rough stone floor. She noted the wrecked minister trembling by the wall, then locked her gaze onto the Warlord.

Kane leaned his head back against the stone, unapologetic.

A wicked smirk touched his lips as he looked from the shivering elf to the sovereign.

"Your turn?"

Sylvara’s expression remained carved from ice.

She didn’t blink, nor did she acknowledge the chaotic state of the room.

"Dress up, Aeloria."

The minister scrambled for her dress, her face burning with humiliation, and fled through the open door without a backward glance.

The iron grate clicked shut, sealing the Warlord and the Queen in the quiet chill of the underground prison.

Sylvara stepped further into the cell, the temperature dropping with every pace she took.

The ambient mana in the room shifted, aligning perfectly with her breathing.

She studied the bruises on his ribs, the Moon-Silver chains binding his wrists, and the unbroken defiance radiating from his posture.

"Kane."

Her voice carried a strange mix of regret and authority, echoing off the bare walls.

"You have become a lord."

"Yes."

He tested the tension of his cuffs, the part that stayed.

"Gotta become one someday to save my life."

"I wasn’t gonna kill you."

"Only when I was loyal."

Kane met her eyes, searching for the woman he used to strategize with over map tables.

"Once I captured Menual, the rules changed. You couldn’t handle a pet that figured out how to open its own cage."

"Hmm."

Sylvara tilted her head, stepping close enough.

"It didn’t change. You did."

’She still thinks she holds all the cards,’ Kane thought, his interface quietly analyzing the invisible barrier she kept layered over her gown.

Reaching out with a slender, pale hand, the Queen traced the line of his abdominal muscles, her fingertips cool against his skin.

It wasn’t a caress; it was an assessment, a reminder of the physical space she could invade without consequence.

"You call it loyalty, Sylvara. I call it a leash."

Kane watched the faint glow of her protective wards shift with her movements.

"When I won the tournament, you offered me a place at your feet. When I captured Menual, I built my own throne."

"A throne of mud and stolen gold," she countered smoothly, pacing a slow circle around him.

"You think securing a single empire gives you the world? The Elven fleets control the rivers. Our mages control the skies. Menual is a temporary nuisance."

"Then why are you down here in a basement talking to a nuisance?"

She stopped, turning to face him fully.

"Because I remember the man who stood in my war room and pointed out the flaws in the northern siege lines. You have a brilliant tactical mind, Kane. It’s a tragedy it is wasted on a savage."

’Classic Sylvander politics. Give with one hand, stab with the other.’

"You could have easily lived by my side," Sylvara murmured, her gaze dropping to his chest before meeting his eyes again.

"I would have even made you someone. A noble. You could have commanded armies under my banner. You would have wanted for nothing. But no. You have to work on getting the World-Tree. You had to aim for the heart of my empire."

"I didn’t work," Kane rolled his shoulders, dismissing her touch and refusing to lean into her warmth.

"I planned. We stalled, didn’t we? The southern borders remained untouched for months while I built my forces. Your supply lines stayed secure. That was because of the time we spent together. I gave you time to fortify."

Sylvara scoffed, a patronizing smile touching her lips.

"Oh, a barbarian being considerate? Should I be thankful? Should I praise you for not burning my villages sooner?"

"No." Kane’s voice went flat, stripped of any lingering affection.

"Just don’t be a bitch."

The torches sputtered. The air grew instantly stifling. Sylvara’s green eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. The illusion of their shared history vanished, replaced by the ruthless monarch who ruled a continent.

’There’s the real Queen,’ Kane observed, his muscles tightening instinctively as his system flashed a warning about rising mana density.

"You mistake my patience for weakness," Sylvara warned, her aura expanding until it pressed against his skin like physical pressure.

"I tolerated your rise because I found you amusing. A novelty. But you have crossed a line."

"I crossed a border," Kane corrected.

"The line was crossed when your commanders started preparing an attack."

"They followed my orders."

"Then you are a worse tactician than I thought."

’Keep pushing her,’ Kane told himself, his eyes tracking the fluctuations in her magic.

"Your little warriors," Sylvara whispered, finally playing her trump card. The venom in her voice was unmistakable.

"Should I kill them?"

Kane’s jaw tightened.

"The daughter of Milfheim. The feral one with the axes. Waiting for their Warlord to save them. One word from me, Kane, and they lose their heads."

The Warlord’s composure snapped.

Lunging forward with blinding speed, Kane ignored the biting pain in his chained wrists and reached straight for her throat.

His broad hand clamped around empty air an inch from her pale skin.

An invisible, unyielding spell caught his fingers, holding his hands suspended in space. The kinetic barrier pushed back with a stubborn, silent force, refusing to let him bridge the final gap.

Sylvara didn’t flinch. She didn’t even blink. She simply watched him strain against her magic, her expression hardening into total disdain.

"A barbarian mind will remain filth despite his title." She took a single step back, leaving him fighting the invisible wall.

"I will give you a choice."

Kane let out a low, mocking laugh, dropping his tension and letting the chains pull his wrists back to the stone.

"You are bluffing, Sylvara," he smiled, his interface projecting a faint blue map only he could see.

"My vanguard is safe in Menual. You don’t have them, and you never did."

Her pristine facade finally cracked.

Stepping directly through her own kinetic ward, the Queen closed the distance. She raised a pale hand, her nails suddenly extending into razor-sharp points.

With deliberate cruelty, she pressed her hand against his bare chest and dragged her claws slowly downward.

Skin parted instantly. Warm blood welled up, spilling in four stinging lines across his muscle.
