Chapter 434: Announcing The Marriage

The kitchen smelled like coffee. Arianne had brewed it herself, which meant it was strong enough to strip paint. She’d counted the grounds to the gram, the same way she did everything. He hadn’t commented. Some battles weren’t worth fighting.

The twins were at the table. Lily was eating her toast in identical bites, each one the same size. Leo was pushing his eggs around his plate, his attention divided between breakfast and the tablet propped against his juice glass. He’d been scrolling through the aquarium photos again. The manta ray had been on the screen for ten minutes.

Franz sat across from Arianne. She was reading something on her phone. Her face was flat.

"Morning," he said. "The weather’s changing."

"Yes." She set the phone face-down. Franz waited. He’d learned that silence like that was never empty.

"I agree," she said.

Franz didn’t move. "Agree with what?"

"Your suggestion. The announcement." She set down the phone. "We should reveal the marriage. And the baby."

Franz looked at her. Two weeks had passed since the brotherhood meeting. Two weeks of silence, of waiting, of watching Arianne turn the Rafael revelation over in her mind like a puzzle she couldn’t solve. Two weeks of watching her thumb press into her palm when she didn’t think he was looking.

"What changed your mind?" he asked.

"Nothing changed it. I thought about it for two weeks. I considered the risks. I considered the benefits. I considered Rafael." She said the name without inflection. "He has information about our family that we don’t know the edges of. Photographs going back three years. If we keep this private, we’re giving him the option to be the one who makes it public. That I won’t do."

"The announcement doesn’t stop him," Franz said.

"No. But it removes his best option. Right now, Rafael can approach either of us and no one knows what the context is. Once the marriage is public, that changes. Any move he makes toward me stops being a private matter. The public knows who Rafael is — a Summers, legitimate or not, which makes him my cousin by blood. Any move he makes toward me becomes two stories at once: a man going after a married woman, and a man going after his own cousin. The press would run both before I would have to, and he knows it. He has to calculate whether I’m worth that kind of exposure." She picked up the coffee. "He’s been circling for years. He circled during the Rohan trip and I didn’t see him. He won’t stop on his own. But he’ll calculate. And the calculation changes when the cost goes up."

"The Rohan photographs—"

"Are already in circulation," she said. "The financial press has been running theories for weeks. The fan forums are trying to connect you to the Mythos meetings. Silence isn’t protecting us anymore. We’re not choosing between disclosure and privacy. We’re choosing between telling the story ourselves or letting someone else tell it."

Franz nodded. She was right. He’d seen the coverage. Noah Hart’s fan club had gone through the Rohan photographs frame by frame, trying to identify the woman in the background of a Mythos Group meeting. The financial press had called it a power move. The tabloids had called it a love story. The truth was somewhere in between, as it usually was.

"When?" he asked.

"Today."

He hadn’t expected that. "Today."

"The sooner we do it, the sooner the narrative settles. I don’t want to spend the next three months defending against speculation. I want to spend them preparing for Rafael."

"It should go on my account," Franz said. "Noah Hart’s. Not yours." She looked at him. He kept his voice level. "You’re the interim CEO. The announcement coming from me keeps you at a remove from the coverage. Cleaner."

She considered it. "The caption is yours too?"

"All of it. Write it the way you want."

She looked at him. "Then write it yourself."

He drafted it on his phone. One paragraph. No preamble. When it was done he read it back to her.

"There are things you don’t plan for. Someone to come home to. Someone to grow old with. And then a small one who arrived and made the rest of it make sense. Learning what to do with that. — N"

Arianne read it. She didn’t change anything.

Lily looked up from her toast. "What caption?"

Arianne turned. "An announcement. Your Uncle Franz and I are going to tell people about our marriage. And about the baby."

"On the internet?" Lily processed this.

"Yes."

"Can I see it?"

Arianne crossed to the table and showed her the phone. The photograph was on the screen. Franz’s hand. Arianne’s hand. A small hand between them, too small to be Leo’s or Lily’s, the fingers curled loosely around Arianne’s thumb. The shot had been taken in the nursery at the estate, morning light soft through the window. Franz could still remember taking it.

"That’s Lexx’s hand," Lily said.

"Yes."

"People won’t know that."

"No."

Leo leaned over to look. His eyes moved to the screen, then to Arianne’s face. He reached out and touched the image, his finger tracing the outline of the tiny hand. Leo looked at her, then at the screen. "So small," he said.

"Yes," Arianne said. "Very small."

The post went up at 10:14 AM. Noah Hart’s verified account. Franz pressed post himself, the phone in his hand, Arianne across the table. The comment count started climbing within seconds. The initial reactions were shock. Then congratulations. Then the questions.

Wait, Noah Hart is MARRIED?

The baby is his?

Who is Arianne Summers exactly? She’s the Rochefort Group CEO?

They kept this secret for how long?

Franz scrolled through the comments on his own phone, the feed refreshing. Some were surprised. Some were delighted. Some were calculating the timeline, trying to figure out when the wedding had happened, when the baby had been born. They couldn’t. The caption had given nothing away.

One comment caught his eye.

Noah Hart didn’t waste time. Secretly got married, had a child. That’s efficiency.

He showed it to Arianne. She looked at it.

"Efficiency," she repeated.

"That’s one way to put it."

"Better than the alternative." She didn’t disagree.

The coverage expanded by noon. The fan forums had picked it up. The tabloids had picked it up. The financial press had picked it up because Arianne Summers was the CEO of a major corporation and her marital status was apparently relevant to shareholder confidence. Franz read the headlines with the strange detachment of someone watching a story unfold that wasn’t quite about him.

Arianne Summers and Noah Hart: A Timeline.

The timeline was inaccurate in almost every particular. Franz noticed. He didn’t correct it.

Arianne was in her office when the news broke across the financial channels. Franz found her at her desk, reading something on her screen.

"Rochefort Group stock is up three percent," she said. "The market likes the stability."

"Stability."

"A married CEO is a predictable CEO." She looked at him. "I didn’t announce it for the stock price, but I’ll take it."

Franz sat across from her. "Any comment from Rafael?"

"Not yet. It’s only been a few hours."

"Tomorrow, then."

"Tomorrow." She turned from the screen. "He’ll have to find another way to get close. People are watching now."

"People were always watching."

"Now they know what to watch for."

Franz looked at her. She was calm. The thumb wasn’t pressing.

"I should thank you," she said.

"For what?"

"The suggestion. The account. The caption. I wouldn’t have done it on my own."

"You would have gotten there."

"Yes. Later. And we don’t have time."
