The house had never been this large before, not even on the nights Franz worked late or the twins spent a weekend at Vincent and Amanda’s. Arianne sat up in bed with her laptop balanced on her knees, half-reading an email she’d already read twice, when the door creaked open and two small shapes appeared in the gap.
"Mommy Aria?"
Lily stood in the doorway in her pajamas, Petal tucked under one arm, Leo just behind her holding his own whale by one arm. Both of them were already dressed for bed, neither one making a move toward their own rooms without an answer first.
"It’s late," Arianne said, setting the laptop aside. "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing’s wrong." Lily shifted her weight from foot to foot. "We just wanted to know if we could sleep with you and Lexx tonight. In Uncle Franz’s room. Since he’s not here to use it."
Leo said nothing, which was usually how Arianne knew he wanted something just as badly as Lily did. He tightened his grip on the whale instead, waiting on his sister to do the talking the way he always did when the request mattered enough that he didn’t want to risk asking it wrong.
"Both of you? With your dolls and everything?"
"We already have them," Lily said, holding up the dinosaur as proof.
Arianne considered it for exactly as long as it took to remember how empty the other side of the bed had been an hour ago. "Get in, then. Both of you."
The twins didn’t need telling twice, scrambling up onto the mattress and arranging themselves on either side of where Lexx’s crib sat within arm’s reach. Lily claimed the spot closest to Arianne without discussion, as if the matter had been decided long before she’d asked permission to be there at all.
"Come here." Arianne patted the space in front of her, and Lily crawled over obediently, turning her back so Arianne could work the comb through the ends of hair that had gotten tangled sometime between dinner and bath. She worked through it slowly, section by section, the same way she had every night since Lily was old enough to sit still for it.
"Ow," Lily said, without much conviction, more out of habit than actual complaint.
"Almost done." Arianne eased through the last knot near her temple. "You’ve let it get long again."
"I like it long."
"I know you do." Arianne set the comb down on the nightstand once the last section fell smooth. "There. Done."
Lily twisted around to face her, tucking her legs underneath herself. "Will Uncle Franz be back before the play?"
"He will. He told me himself this morning, and he already booked the flight to make sure of it." Arianne smoothed a strand back from Lily’s forehead. "He wouldn’t miss it for anything. You know that."
"I know. I just wanted to hear it again."
"You can hear it as many times as you need to." Arianne studied her, this child who used to need help climbing into this exact bed and now sat cross-legged on top of it negotiating bedtime terms like a small attorney. Leo had already burrowed under the blanket on the other side, whale pinned under one arm, eyes half open, refusing to miss anything before sleep won the argument outright. Three years ago, neither of them would have sleep without seeing her first, as if they were afraid, she would leave them. Now they held entire conversations about school plays and comb strokes and who got which side of the bed, taller each year in ways that still managed to surprise her when she wasn’t looking for it.
"Can Lexx sleep with us? On the bed?" Lily glanced over at the crib, where Lexx lay on his back working one fist toward his mouth. "There’s room."
"No." Arianne said it gently but without room for negotiation. "He’s too small still. If one of you rolled over in your sleep, he could get hurt without either of you meaning to. He’s safer in his crib, right where I can reach him."
"But he’s right there."
"Right there is close enough." Arianne reached over and adjusted his blanket instead, tucking the edge in around his shoulders. "You can see him from here. That’s enough for tonight."
Lily accepted this the way she accepted most rules that came with an actual reason attached, settling back down beside Leo without further argument. Arianne turned off the lamp, leaving only the soft glow from Lexx’s night-light to spill across the room, and lay back against the pillows with a child on either side of her and a crib within reach.
"Goodnight, Mommy Aria, goodnight, Lexx," Lily said, already half asleep.
"Goodnight, love."
Leo mumbled something that might have been the same, already gone under, and within minutes both twins had gone completely limp against the pillows, the way children only manage when they trust every inch of the room around them. Lexx shifted once in his crib and settled again, his breathing falling into the same slow rhythm as the two on the bed.
Arianne stayed awake a while longer, listening to all three of them breathe, the house finally full instead of large. The empty side of the mattress wouldn’t stay empty for two whole weeks at this rate, not with this particular arrangement apparently settled between the three of them without her needing to suggest it twice. Tomorrow there would be homework and breakfast and Lexx’s morning bottle to manage without an extra pair of hands, but tonight there was just this, a room full of the people she’d built a life around, breathing in the dark like none of it required any effort at all.
She reached over once more to check the crib, found Lexx’s small chest rising and falling steadily under the blanket, and let herself drift off somewhere in the middle of counting exactly how many nights stood between tonight and Franz walking back through the front door.
