Yun Hao covered his nose and took two steps back, a look of disgust on his face.
"What’s that smell? It stinks."
’Stinks!’
Xu Wenwan’s face twisted for a moment. This was the perfume she had worked so hard to create, yet Yun Hao had the audacity to say it stank.
’Does this man have any taste at all?’
"Can’t you smell the fragrance in the air?"
’Fragrance?’
Yun Hao didn’t smell any fragrance. All he got was a pungent, bizarre odor that was absolutely foul.
If it weren’t for his incredible self-control, he would have thrown up right then and there.
But he couldn’t be bothered to argue with Xu Wenwan.
"Cut the crap and go make dinner."
For once, Xu Wenwan didn’t argue. She went into the kitchen with surprising obedience, which made Yun Hao give her a second glance.
’Just as I thought. You can’t spoil women. Hit them once, and they learn their place.’
In the kitchen, Xu Wenwan successfully started a fire with her system’s help.
She knew how to cook.
Besides, it wasn’t like they had anything good to eat—just cornmeal and dried sweet potato. Xu Wenwan washed them, tossed them into the pot, and then simply had to keep an eye on it.
As for side dishes, there were only some potatoes and cabbage. They had been kept at the educated youth house, and Yun Hao had brought them over after he got married.
The potatoes and cabbage were from the educated youth house’s private plot, and he had been allotted a share.
Xu Wenwan shot them a disgusted look, then took a bit of the cabbage and started chopping it for a stir-fry. There would be no other main dish.
In the winter, villagers didn’t do much manual labor, so a bowl of cornmeal porridge was considered a decent meal. No other staple was necessary.
Once the meal was ready and set on the table, Xu Wenwan called Yun Hao to eat.
She had already placed the Obedience Pill in Yun Hao’s bowl. Once he ate it, she would be free to go find Leng Yuan.
Yun Hao was a little surprised by how obedient Xu Wenwan was being today, but he didn’t give it much thought.
He felt quite satisfied after finishing the bowl of food.
But the moment he finished eating, Xu Wenwan’s expression changed. "Yun Hao, since I cooked, don’t you think you should do the dishes?"
In his mind, Yun Hao refused, but his head nodded against his will.
Xu Wenwan was pleased.
"Good. Then you’ll wash the dishes, sweep the courtyard, and don’t forget to clean my room. Oh, and while you’re at it, heat up some water for me to wash my feet."
’Xu Wenwan must be insane,’ Yun Hao thought.
’How dare she order me to do these things?’
Yet, the next moment, he stood up and began obediently clearing the dishes.
Yun Hao wanted to refuse, but his body felt as if it didn’t belong to him, compelling him to work.
Seeing how effective the Obedience Pill was, Xu Wenwan paid Yun Hao no more mind and turned to head out.
She had told her system she was going to find Leng Yuan, and she intended to keep her word.
Village Chief Xu, worried that Xu Wenwan would keep running back to her parents’ house, had specifically rented a courtyard for her at the village entrance. As it turned out, this new place was much closer to Leng Yuan’s house.
As Xu Wenwan approached the gate, she caught the fragrant aroma of stewed fish.
’The food at Leng Yuan’s house is way too good! It’s the middle of winter and everyone else is rationing their food, but his family is actually eating fish!’
Xu Wenwan’s face contorted at the thought of Gu Jiaojiao living such a comfortable life.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t thought about going after Gu Jiaojiao, but she could never find an opportunity.
Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao lived outside the village and didn’t interact much with the other villagers. Even if she wanted to target Gu Jiaojiao, there was no way for her to get started.
’For now, all I can do is act friendly.’
Xu Wenwan stepped forward and knocked on the gate.
Inside, they had just finished their meal. Sweet Girl eagerly started cleaning up the kitchen with Xiao Yang helping at her side, while Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan sat at the table chatting.
Just then, a knock came from the courtyard gate, which puzzled them all.
Leng Yuan’s house was at the foot of the mountain, and they rarely had visitors. The sound of knocking seemed unusually frequent today.
Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao went out together. When they opened the gate, they saw Xu Wenwan standing outside.
Both of them were rather surprised.
They had no dealings whatsoever with Xu Wenwan.
But Xu Wenwan acted as if they were old friends. "Leng Yuan, Jiaojiao, I’m living at the village entrance now, so I’m very close by. I figured since we’re neighbors, I’d come over and say hello."
