Chapter 155: black root hallow

The third day opened under low clouds and a thin drizzle that did nothing to cool the air. Trevor had the team at the C-rank gate before the training sector fully opened. Blackroot Hollow sat deeper in the restricted zone, its entrance a wide maw of twisted black roots and stone that pulsed faintly with residual toxin. Official rating: C. Average clear time for competent teams: seventy to ninety minutes. Fatality rate among uncoordinated groups: non-trivial.

The registration clerk this morning was different—a sharp-eyed B-rank supervisor who actually read the prior clear data. She looked at Trevor’s group for a long moment, then at the exceptional ratings from the F-rank runs, and approved the entry without comment. The gate seals released.

They stepped through.

Blackroot Hollow smelled of wet earth, decay, and something acrid that clung to the back of the throat. The toxin was already present in the air—slow-acting, designed to degrade focus and essence efficiency over time. The system network automatically shared filtration techniques and micro-adjustments to breathing patterns. Within ten seconds every member’s internal filters were optimized.

Trevor’s voice was flat.

"Standard formation. Higher threat density. Expect multi-wave pressure and environmental denial. Link stays primary. Verbal only if the network is disrupted."

They moved into the first root corridor.

The initial engagement came faster than in the F-ranks. A pack of blackroot stalkers—six-legged, toxin-slick, and capable of short bursts of speed—dropped from the ceiling and walls simultaneously. Rhea and Lisa met the front without hesitation. Their blades cut in coordinated arcs that left no clean angle of approach. Vespera’s cold energy flash-froze the toxin coating on two of the creatures, making their armor brittle. Seraphine’s light lances exploited the fractures instantly. Mia’s barriers appeared only where a stalker tried to spray concentrated toxin. Caroline’s strikes were surgical. Elena tracked the residual toxin levels in real time and pulsed a single correction when one creature attempted to dig under the formation.

Trevor killed the largest himself with a single thrust through the primary nerve cluster. The entire exchange lasted under seven seconds.

They did not slow.

Blackroot Hollow’s design punished momentum loss. The corridors branched and re-joined in deliberate maze patterns. Toxin vents opened without warning. Root traps attempted to isolate individuals. Trevor’s group treated every hazard as already solved. The network shared threat vectors, safe paths, and essence allocation faster than any verbal call could have managed. When a section of ceiling collapsed to force them into a side chamber filled with mature stalkers, the team entered the chamber as a single killing unit and left it empty twenty seconds later.

Forty-one minutes after entry they reached the central hollow.

The core guardian was a Blackroot Sovereign—an enormous, multi-limbed construct of living wood and concentrated toxin, capable of flooding the chamber with debilitating mist and regenerating severed limbs from the surrounding roots. It was built to exhaust teams that had already spent heavily on the approach.

Trevor’s group had not.

He gave one command through the network.

"Full pattern. No solo plays."

Rhea and Lisa engaged the primary limbs, forcing the Sovereign to commit its mass forward. Vespera and Seraphine worked the flanks in alternating cold and light pulses, disrupting the regeneration nodes before they could fully form. Mia layered short-duration barriers over the points where toxin mist tried to concentrate. Caroline and Elena moved as a paired unit, striking exposed joints the moment the others created openings. Trevor himself targeted the central core cluster, driving successive precise cuts that prevented the Sovereign from stabilizing.

The fight lasted four minutes and eleven seconds.

When the Sovereign finally collapsed into inert wood and steaming toxin, the system registered the clear.

[Dungeon Clear: Blackroot Hollow]

[Time: 45 minutes 23 seconds]

[Team Coordination Rating: Exceptional]

[Network Synchronization: 98%]

[Toxin exposure: minimal across all members]

They exited into the drizzle. Steam rose from their armor where residual toxin met the cool air. No one was injured. Essence reserves remained above 65 percent—high for a C-rank clear at that tempo.

Trevor reviewed the data in silence while the team rehydrated and checked filters.

"Synchronization is near ceiling for current mark depth. Latency is negligible. Emotional and tactical bleed are both clean. The network is performing at the level I need for Ice Forge."

He looked at each of them.

"We run it one more time after a short recovery. Higher tempo. I will introduce two forced network interruptions mid-clear to test fallback protocols under toxin load. After the second clear we return to the residence. Gear down. Full medical check. Then the first controlled essence reinforcement session begins."

Rhea wiped toxin residue from her blade. "How controlled?"

"Short. Measured. One partner first to establish the baseline improvement. Then we expand if the metrics justify it. Everything logged against synchronization and Ice Forge survival projection. No excess."

Lisa’s eyes narrowed slightly, but she nodded. Mia’s expression remained calm and accepting. Vespera’s cool pulse through the network carried quiet anticipation. Seraphine simply inclined her head. Caroline and Elena exchanged a brief glance and settled into readiness. Rhea cracked her neck once and said nothing more.

They re-entered Blackroot Hollow forty minutes later.

Trevor forced the first network blackout during a multi-wave engagement in the third corridor. The team switched to pre-set verbal and visual protocols without hesitation and lost only three seconds of efficiency. The second blackout came during the Sovereign fight itself. They adapted again. The clear time still finished under fifty-one minutes.

When they walked out the final time, the drizzle had thickened into steady rain. The group moved with the quiet, exhausted focus of a unit that had been deliberately pushed to the edge of its current limits and had not broken.

Back at the residence Trevor ordered immediate medical scans and toxin purges. Elena and Caroline handled the checks while the others stripped out of contaminated gear. Once every reading came back clean, Trevor gathered them in the main living area.

"Data is locked. Network is stable at 98 percent under C-rank load. That is the combat baseline. Now we improve the mark depth."

He looked at Mia first.

"You first. Controlled session. We measure the synchronization delta immediately after. If the improvement is within projected range, we continue with the others on a schedule that does not compromise tomorrow’s final training block."

Mia met his eyes and gave a single nod.

The others remained silent. They understood the sequence.

Trevor dismissed the system windows.

One and a half days remained before the Ice Forge.

The network was strong.

He intended to make it stronger.

The residence was sealed. Outer wards locked. Internal privacy barriers raised. Trevor dismissed the residual toxin readings and medical logs with a thought. Every member of the team had scanned clean. Essence reserves were recovering. The network sat at a steady 98 percent.

He looked at Mia.

"With me."

She followed without hesitation. The others remained in the main living area under standing orders: rest, light recovery only, no sparring, no essence expenditure. Rhea had already claimed a corner and closed her eyes. Lisa sat cleaning her blade with methodical focus. Vespera and Seraphine occupied the shadowed end of the long couch, silent. Caroline and Elena reviewed the Blackroot Hollow data on a shared projection.

Trevor led Mia upstairs to the primary chamber. The door sealed behind them with a soft click of reinforced wards. The room was simple—large bed, minimal furniture, dim lighting. He had used it for this purpose before. The system interface opened privately between them.

[Controlled Essence Reinforcement – Session 1]

[Partner: Mia Lane]

[Objective: Measure synchronization delta post-exchange]

[Parameters: Full essence transfer, monitored duration, no external interference]

Mia stood in the center of the room and unfastened her robe. It fell to the floor. Her body still carried the faint residual marks from previous nights—fading bites, light bruises, the permanent system sigil low on her abdomen that glowed softly when his attention settled on it. She did not cover herself.

Trevor removed his own gear in efficient silence. When he was bare he stepped close, one hand settling at her waist, the other tipping her chin up.

"This is not recreation. It is reinforcement. I will take what the system requires. You will give it. Afterward we measure. Clear?"

"Clear," she answered.

He kissed her once—deep, controlled, no wasted motion—then guided her to the bed. Mia lay back. Trevor followed, settling between her thighs. He did not rush the preparation. Fingers tested her readiness, found her already slick, and worked her open with deliberate pressure until her breathing shifted. Only then did he position himself and push inside in a single, steady thrust.

Mia’s back arched. A low sound left her throat. The system registered the initial connection immediately—essence pathways opening, the familiar circuit between their marks flaring to life.

Trevor set a measured pace. Deep. Consistent. Not the frantic rhythm of pure lust. Every thrust was calculated to maximize essence exchange while keeping her body responsive. His hands pinned her wrists lightly above her head. His mouth worked her neck and the upper curve of her breasts, leaving fresh marks that the system logged as secondary anchors.
