Chapter 436: Beside Him

The rescued child refused the royal carriage and stood beside the wagon while Loccy climbed inside with both arms splinted against her chest.

Loccy took the far bench without reaching for anyone, leaving the padded space beside her open while the child watched from beneath a records desk.

Rumi and Nari waited at opposite doors, each trying to make the wagon look less crowded without staring at the frightened figure near the wheel.

Vella checked the splints, then pointed toward the seats and the folded blanket the child had carried from the temporary court.

"Do you want the blanket beside Loccy, or would you rather choose the seat nearest the open door?" Vella asked, keeping both options visible.

The child crawled from beneath the desk, picked up the blanket herself, and climbed the wagon step without accepting a hand.

Loccy shifted her shoulder a few inches, giving the child room while the splints kept both arms useless.

Rumi moved back from the door, and Nari mirrored her before the two twins settled together against the opposite wall.

The child placed the blanket between herself and Loccy, then looked toward the road where the Sixth waited beyond the capital.

The royal clerk raised a family-status form, but Vella folded it closed before the pen reached the child’s space.

"A destination is enough for this journey, and no paper will turn travel into consent for a permanent family," Vella told the clerk.

The clerk retreated with the form while Loccy’s splinted fingers tapped once against the bench in approval.

Rumi offered the child a ration packet, and Nari moved the water flask within reach without touching the blanket.

The child accepted the food from the seat between them, then returned her gaze to the house symbol on the map.

The driver waited beside the carriage with the door open, while royal attendants argued quietly over whether the unnamed child needed a guard assigned to her.

Vella turned from the form and made the decision visible to every official who had been watching the wagon.

"A guard may protect the road, but nobody receives authority over her choices simply through standing nearby," Vella said, folding the map.

The attendants exchanged glances and moved the escort line farther away from the wagon, leaving the child room to watch the road without a uniform at her shoulder.

Loccy shifted again when the wagon rocked, and the child reached for the splint rather than the nearest adult hand.

"The brace stays in place, and you can touch the leather without touching the broken arm," Loccy told her, lowering her voice.

The child rested two fingers against the outside strap, then withdrew them when the wagon stopped rocking.

Rumi and Nari watched the gesture from their shared corner, letting the child decide whether the contact ended there.

The small exchange made the wagon quieter, with no adult converting caution into gratitude or asking the child to perform trust for the road.

Vella unfolded a simple map with pictures for the palace, the road, and the regional gate.

"This mark is the capital, this road leads toward the Sixth, and this house shows where your wagon can stop," Vella explained, tapping each symbol.

The child touched the house symbol, then touched the wagon floor and held her finger there while the royal clerk waited for a name.

No name came, and no adult treated the destination choice as permission for a family claim, a bloodline declaration, or permanent integration.

Vella wrote only the chosen destination beside the reversible Sanctuary record, leaving the child’s future status blank.

The first signal came before the convoy left the court, and the driver halted when a tremor passed through the road marker.

The child climbed back inside under her own movement after the quiet minute ended, carrying the house symbol in the folded blanket.

That second choice mattered more than a royal form, since travel beside Hajin still meant a place she could leave later.

Didi joined Hajin outside after her brother’s funeral, wearing a black ribbon around one wrist and carrying the three points granted by her fourth Shard.

Vella examined Didi’s breathing and mana flow before allowing the progression panel to open, making sure spent resources had returned through rest rather than allocation.

"The operation is over, and I will close this ledger before carrying another claim," Didi said, opening the panel with her own hand.

Three points appeared beneath her progression record, untouched by the funeral, the street protection, or the battle around the throne.

Didi placed two points into Mana and one into Stamina, then waited while Aria recorded the distribution.

[ Didi: Fourth Shard Allocation Complete ]

[ Mana +2 ]

[ Stamina +1 ]

[ Resource restoration: None ]

The panel closed without a fifth Shard, a completed Zone, or a new ability, leaving True Bearer tied to the protection she chose to practice.

Hajin watched Didi lower her hand and keep the decision separate from the courtship Eirwen had declared the day before.

Eirwen waited near the lead wagon under her own Alder authority, with embassy orders in one hand and no request to follow Didi’s choices.

Eirwen greeted Didi beside the road while the royal clerks loaded supplies for the Sixth.

"Her declaration does not turn affection into a race, and it does not erase the years I spent reaching equal footing," Didi told Hajin, keeping her eyes on him.

Hajin let the sentence finish before touching the ring on his pinky or making either woman wait for a verdict.

"I will not compare either relationship into a rank, and neither answer becomes another person’s loss by default," he replied, keeping his voice low.

Didi glanced toward Eirwen’s separate travel orders, then toward the wagon where the unnamed child had chosen only a destination.

"True Bearer grew when I protected someone without claiming her, so I will make my place through protection rather than outranking another woman," Didi said.

The choice left no room for Hajin to reward her with a title or turn the statement into a contest he controlled.

"Eirwen’s title does not decide your place, and neither do I by myself," Hajin answered, meeting Didi’s eyes.

Didi stepped closer and touched his cheek while the road crew moved behind them.

"Good, then this is my decision, and I will make it without asking the court to approve me," she said, keeping her hand steady.

Hajin leaned into her palm before the ribs beneath his coat pulled him back toward caution.

Didi kissed him quietly, with no Crowned Frost, bloodline resonance, or public audience demanding a meaning from the contact.

The kiss ended before his healing shoulder protested, and Didi adjusted without turning the pain into embarrassment.

Didi kept her forehead near his for one breath, then stepped back while the wagon driver called that the road was clear.

"I will remain through the first reconstruction hearings, since my brother’s victims deserve testimony before I chase another horizon," Didi told him, folding the black ribbon into her palm.

Hajin nodded toward the child, whose blanket still held the drawn house symbol.

"The Sixth road remains open whenever you choose it, and I will offer no deadline that turns distance into pressure," he promised.

Didi accepted the future conversation without demanding certainty before the convoy departed.

"Protect that child’s destination without naming the next choice for her," Didi said, looking toward the wagon.

"That is the plan, and the record will show only what she has chosen," Hajin replied, stepping away from the road.

The child moved one ration packet away from the wagon’s center and kept eating while no one interpreted her attention as attachment to the twins.

Loccy watched the road through the open door with both arms held in their braces, while Rumi and Nari remained together without crowding the child.

Eirwen’s embassy wagon turned toward the same route under separate orders, and Didi stayed beside the temporary court with her funeral work unfinished.

The child kept the house symbol inside her blanket, Didi kept her choice inside the capital, and Hajin left with neither decision converted into ownership.

The wagon moved only after Vella confirmed the child’s Sanctuary remained reversible and Loccy’s splints had not shifted against the road jolts.

Didi watched from the temporary court steps while the child chose the open doorway again, then tucked the map’s house symbol into the blanket without surrendering it to a clerk.

The two women remained separate in distance and decision, while Hajin carried the knowledge that affection could grow beside him without becoming a contest for his permission.

The royal court kept Didi’s testimony seat open while Eirwen’s embassy wagon received its own supply list, and neither order borrowed authority from the other.

Hajin climbed into the lead wagon only after the road clerk confirmed the child’s destination had been recorded without a name.

The departure bell sounded once, and the child looked back at the temporary court before choosing to face the Sixth road.

The road accepted the wagon without asking the child to become someone else before reaching it.
