Chapter 437: The Next Node Answers

The convoy reached the outer road of the Sixth with six Rings closed, forty percent Fragment Recovery, and no clean victory display to carry ahead of it.

Hajin rode near the front with the restored Legendary Chain in inventory, two unnamed Mythic Growth blades secured behind it, and the broken brace pieces wrapped in Ferra’s cloth.

Loccy’s splints rested against the wagon wall, while the child kept the house symbol inside her blanket and watched the repaired road through a narrow gap.

Juna walked beside the lead wheel, and Rumi plus Nari traded the opposite watch without crowding the child inside.

Eirwen’s Alder riders followed under separate embassy orders, carrying maps, language supplies, and a request for rented rooms rather than a claim over the Sixth.

The road gate opened before the convoy reached the final marker, and Marrick waited with the absence ledger pressed against his chest.

"The registry stayed open, the roof timber arrived, and two ceremonial purchases were denied while you were away," Marrick reported, touching the ledger cover.

Hajin dismounted and accepted the book without taking credit for choices made during his absence.

"Show me who made each decision, what it cost, and which follow-up remains unfinished," Hajin replied, turning the first page.

Marrick pointed to emergency repairs, a disciplined gate officer, and a supply order that had been redirected toward the clinic.

"The officer tried using your new Ranker status to waive inspection, so the gate kept the old rule and the officer lost his post," Marrick explained, holding the page flat.

Hajin nodded once, then returned the ledger to Marrick with the final page still open beneath his thumb.

"Keep the authority you exercised while I was gone, and bring me disputes rather than waiting for my name to solve them," Hajin told him.

Marrick’s shoulders lowered after the answer, and the final absence line received his own mark instead of a ceremonial signature from Hajin.

The ledger held a roof repaired without applause, a gate rule kept against a famous name, and a clinic shipment moved toward people who could identify its need.

Those small decisions gave the returning convoy a place to arrive, even while the household still carried the cost of the capital battle in splints and sealed crates.

Hans approached from the Gold Mountain road with a sealed mine record under one arm and mud still drying across his boots.

"The sealed mine was not breached, and no second signal appeared during supervised socket checks," Hans reported, handing over the record.

The statement left the surrounding workers quiet, since every person near the gate remembered what the first signal had cost.

Taren arrived behind Hans with a road map rolled beneath one elbow and a list of patrol changes tucked into his belt.

"The roads stayed open under delegated authority, and Uriel’s Flint administration kept follow-up care active for discharged soldiers," Taren said, tapping the map.

Hajin read the marked routes and saw that no patrol had been sent beyond the mapped boundary toward the unknown node.

"Keep the roads ordinary until we know what answered, and do not send a family into blank ground for my curiosity," Hajin ordered.

Taren folded the map and returned it to his belt while Hans kept the mine seal in his hand.

Eirwen approached Marrick before the Alder riders unloaded their chests, with her own treaty seal held below the civil seal on the embassy document.

"Where can my staff live without displacing a Sixth household?" Eirwen asked, looking from Marrick to the repaired storehouses.

Marrick pointed toward unused rooms beyond the eastern storehouse and named the posted renovation rate without asking Hajin to overrule him.

"The embassy can rent those rooms and pay the workers directly, while the registry keeps its authority over the public road," Marrick replied, keeping his pen ready.

Eirwen accepted the terms and placed her seal beneath Hajin’s civil mark, leaving the practical role separate from the courtship title.

Her riders unloaded map cases beside the gate rather than raising an Alder banner over the registry, and the workers received posted wages before touching the embassy repairs.

Marrick recorded the arrangement while Eirwen signed the rental line, letting the new embassy enter the Sixth as a tenant with obligations instead of a court with inherited authority.

The household reached Gold Mountain’s sealed socket before sunset, with Lana carrying Ash and Ferra inspecting the mundane frame around the old geometry.

Ash slipped down from Lana’s arms when she set the physical stop line, then stared at the socket with one hand tucked beneath his sleeve.

"You can approach the line, and you can stop before the light asks anything from you," Lana told him, kneeling nearby.

Ash looked at Hajin, then at the sealed mine, and moved forward only after Lana’s hand remained open beside the marker.

Ferra checked the frame for avatar residue while Hans placed ordinary measuring tools outside the protected distance.

"The frame is clean, and the socket carries no heat from the mountain battle," Ferra announced, keeping her fingers away from the old groove.

Ash placed one hand near the socket without touching the stone, and a tremor moved beneath his wrist.

Lana watched Ash’s face instead of the glowing line, keeping her attention on his choice rather than the spectacle.

"Do you want to continue after that response, or should we close the frame now?" Lana asked, keeping the decision with him.

Ash nodded once and held his hand steady while Hajin opened no Ring and sent no command through the unknown designation.

One stable halo formed around Ash’s right wrist, matching the singular manifestation seen before the capital war.

The light did not climb toward his neck, form a Wing, or connect to Hajin’s closed sixth Ring.

Aria measured the halo while Hans copied the bearing with a compass, and the line turned beyond Gold Mountain toward land absent from every current kingdom map.

"An external old-world node answered for one measured moment, but the designation offers no route, distance, or occupant data," Aria said inside Hajin’s thoughts.

Eirwen raised twelve Alder Shards around the projected direction and watched their roots fade before the settled court’s border.

"That bearing leaves every settled Alder boundary, and our oldest root maps show blank land before the line ends," Eirwen said, lowering the Shards.

Ash kept the halo stable until Hans finished copying the direction, then turned his wrist toward Lana without stepping beyond her marker.

Lana gave one clear signal, and Ash withdrew his hand before the halo could multiply.

The light vanished without a combat effect, a reward panel, or a second projection.

Ash’s shoulders dropped when the halo disappeared, and Lana waited through the disappointment before offering to carry him back to the wagon.

"The direction can remain in the ledger, and your wrist does not need to answer again today," Lana told him, placing one hand beside his shoulder.

Ash covered the wrist with his sleeve and walked back under his own strength while Ferra closed the mundane frame.

Hajin looked at the dark socket and felt the urge to send a Ring through the line, then remembered the scars beneath his sleeve and left the boundary untouched.

Eirwen kept her Shards lowered while the household chose caution, and her embassy riders marked the bearing without placing an Alder claim on the land beyond it.

The socket returned to ordinary stone while Hans repeated the measurement through two instruments and obtained no new answer.

The second measurement took long enough for Ash to lose interest and sit on Lana’s boot, yet Hans completed every check before allowing the adults to discuss the direction.

Ferra marked the frame with chalk, not a royal seal, so the next inspection would find the exact place where the halo had answered.

Ash rubbed his wrist and frowned at the darkness where the halo had been.

"The light is gone, but that place still feels warm inside my wrist," Ash reported, looking toward Hajin.

Hajin knelt outside the boundary and kept his hands away from Ash’s sleeve.

"Did anything speak back, or did the direction appear without a voice?" Hajin asked, watching the child’s face.

Ash shook his head and leaned against Lana’s knee while the adults waited without forcing another test.

The Goddess remained inside the Fragment, awake but unable to see through Hajin’s senses while he stayed outside the inner chamber.

Aria stored the single verified bearing, and Marrick added it to the expedition ledger without inventing a distance or claiming the land beyond the map.

Hans kept the mine sealed, while Taren extended road preparation only to the edge of known ground.

Eirwen offered Alder root surveys for the next expedition as Hajin postponed the second measurement until Loccy, the child, and his own body finished recovering.

The Sixth had survived his absence through delegated authority as the enlarged household returned with splints, scars, broken tools, and a destination no one had promised to keep.

Beyond Gold Mountain, another node had answered for one measured moment without anyone crossing the protected line.

The bearing entered the expedition ledger as a direction rather than a promise, while Ash covered the answering wrist beneath his sleeve and the road home waited behind them.

No one stepped across the line to make the unknown answer explain itself before the household was ready.
