Hans removed the refusal socket from sealed storage only after Lana marked the same distance line she had used for Ash’s first bearing.
In daylight, the frame looked ordinary, almost disappointingly plain after weeks behind layered seals. Ferra had already checked every joint for avatar residue, so the danger belonged to Ash’s core rather than the device.
Hajin kept every Ring closed around his recovering wrist while Vella’s six-Ring ban remained active. A second node answer could reveal a route, but it was not permission to test burns through damaged pathways.
Ash walked to the line under his own feet, his older-child height making the earlier baby restrictions seem almost funny until anyone remembered what his small hands could dent.
Lana crouched until their eyes met and said, "The same rules apply, and you choose whether to continue after the first response, while I do not move your arm for you."
Ash nodded beneath the porch light without reaching for the socket before she gave him permission.
Eirwen waited outside the marked circle with her embassy papers folded shut and twelve quiet Shards ready to compare living-root maps against whatever direction returned.
Juna held the lane clear of petitioners while Loccy watched from a safe brace against the clinic wall, her wrapped arms still supported. Rumi and Nari divided the exits without crowding Ash’s wrists.
’The first answer gave us a bearing,’ Hajin thought, ’and a second answer will tell us whether the road still exists or only remembers being called.’
After Lana’s nod, Ash placed one hand near the socket frame without touching the metal.
A single stable halo formed around his right wrist, matching the established shape from before while remaining singular and small. It was neither a Wing nor a copy of Hajin’s sixth Ring.
The light made one quiet turn around Ash’s wrist bones and stopped before reaching his elbow, so no second manifestation climbed into the arm.
Its projected line crossed Gold Mountain, passed beyond the Alder Court’s settled borders, and ended in the same unmapped blank Aria had filed after the group’s return home.
"External old-world node response," Aria said inside Hajin’s thoughts, "the designation remains encrypted, and the signal has not supplied a distance scale."
The socket then produced a deeper pulse that the first answer had never shown. It moved beneath the mountain’s sealed galleries instead of traveling through the inert mine array as a usable gate.
The movement felt less like an opening than a dormant imprint waking far below Hans’s braces, and Hans felt it through the ground before Aria finished labeling the reply.
Hans set his spear tip against the stone for balance and said, "Something answered beneath Gold Mountain, but it is not a breach, because the reply came from below the sealed galleries."
Ferra turned toward the eastern peaks with forge-trained alarm and said, "That is custodian grammar, old, buried, and hungry for a living listener, but not yet strong enough to show us a body."
Ash held the halo steady until the projection finished, then looked toward Lana without moving his hand farther into the chosen distance.
Lana remained outside the line and asked, "Do you want to continue, or should we stop with the answer we already have?"
Ash shook his head and withdrew his hand on his own, so the halo closed without a second turn, a combat effect, or a drop drawn from Hajin’s pathways.
[ RationalSkeptic7: ] same bearing, new underground reply, that is a plot hook with manners
[ GrandmaViewer: ] child stopped himself, raise that boy right
Aria separated the deeper pulse from Ash’s unknown designation and from every Dominion-class frequency before she gave the result to the witnesses.
"A dormant imprint beneath Gold Mountain answered the Ringlet," Aria said, exact as inventory chalk, "there is no open descent body, and the local mine array remains inert."
Eirwen checked the projected line against her living-root surveys and found that the surface bearing had not shifted. The distant road still pointed beyond their maps toward the same unmapped east.
"The road beyond our maps still holds," Eirwen said, precise for the clerks, "but whatever woke under your mountain is not the destination, because it is an older promise noticing the call."
Hajin crouched outside the line where Ash could see him without feeling boxed in. He waited until the child’s wrist looked ordinary again before asking the question that mattered.
"Did anything tell you to go into the mine?" Hajin asked, keeping his voice gentle and leaving the answer room to arrive without pressure.
Ash shook his head until his hair struck both cheeks, then touched his own wrist as if checking whether the halo had left a mark.
"Still here," Ash said, looking toward Hajin’s chest, "mother?"
The word settled across the porch like a stone dropped into still water. Lana’s hand hovered near Ash’s shoulder without steering him, while Ferra’s jaw tightened and Hans studied the sealed mountain road.
’He may not know why he said it,’ Hajin thought, ’or he may know in a way that our language cannot reach yet.’
Hajin kept his gaze on Ash and said, "We do not open the mine because of one word, but we will verify the bearing, keep the seal, and make sure nothing under that rock feeds on you."
Ash accepted the answer with a small nod, then climbed against Hajin’s front and clung there as the adults’ sudden tension bothered him more than the closed halo.
Vella scanned them for backlash and found only Ash’s excitement, plus the Sanctuary quiet from the clinic doorway where the child had hidden in Loccy’s coat.
Marrick opened the territory book and wrote three lines while his pen tried not to shake. He read the first entry back slowly for every witness.
"The bearing is confirmed identical," Marrick said, holding the page level, "and a deeper imprint answered beneath Gold Mountain without opening the mine."
He added the boundary order beneath it and said, "The mine seal remains enforced, and no patrol crosses the mapped edge without the lord’s order."
Taren repeated the mapped-edge limit to the gate crews before rumor could turn the underground reply into a treasure rush.
Juna stared east until her ears flattened against her hair, then looked back toward Ash and Hajin without unsheathing her claws.
"If his mother is waking, I want her counted as family or threat before she reaches the wall," Juna said, keeping her attention on the sealed road, "we need a category before fear chooses one for us."
Hajin stayed steady on the porch boards and answered, "Family comes first until she proves otherwise, because Ash said the word and we do not outvote his hope with panic."
Eirwen did not correct him with Alder doctrine from the embassy step. She tapped her folded papers once before giving the clerks a narrower instruction.
"A living custodian answering a free child is older than Holy Land offices," Eirwen said, "I will prepare language for contact without claiming custody, status, or authority over Ash."
Ferra sealed the socket frame again and marked the crate with a fresh inventory notch, checking the latch twice before she stepped away from it.
"If that imprint rises, I want its geometry before anyone names it holy," Ferra said, wiping her hands on her apron, "an answer leaves structure, and structure can be forged around or broken."
Ash remained against Hajin and repeated the newer word from the measuring morning with deliberate timing.
"Displeased," Ash said, setting his chin against Hajin’s chest, "with all the grown-up tension."
Hajin rested one hand between Ash’s shoulders and asked, "With the tension, or with the mountain?"
"With the tension," Ash said, and his grip loosened when the adults finally stopped speaking over the sealed road.
[ Loccy_Defense_Squad: ] he said mother and the whole porch forgot how to breathe
[ CringeSlayer91: ] halo points again and the mountain answers, i am not fine
Aria stored the paired results as identical far bearing, new underground reply, Ash unharmed, and no combat manifestation.
"Route status updated from single bearing to bearing plus waking imprint," Aria said, "inspection of the sealed mine is recommended only after Hans clears the braces, and no gallery should reopen for curiosity."
Hajin looked from Ash’s quiet wrist to the eastern peaks, then signed Marrick’s three-line entry before anyone could dress the imprint in festival language.
Hans reset the mine-road watch with the same sealed-brace orders as the previous day, though every patrol now carried instructions to report a ground pulse without chasing it.
Ash stayed against Hajin until the porch emptied, then fell asleep during the climb like an older child who had done enough answering for one afternoon.
Marrick filed copies for Hans, Taren, and the embassy before sunset while the eastern peaks kept their silence above a seal no one was allowed to break for curiosity.
