Didi arrived after the morning contracts went up, a compact woman with close-cut black hair, a straight back, and a Crown permission seal in hand.
Elina followed with two record keepers, three travel cases, and a tired face that suggested she had explained the same decision since the carriage left.
Hajin watched the empty road behind them and thought, ’The Crown sent a seal instead of an army,’ resting his hand on the gate, ’so someone wants credit for restraint.’
Didi stopped outside the registry and held the seal toward Marrick, who read its edges before turning the wax toward the morning light.
Didi said, "The Crown authorizes an inquiry into the escaped royal bloodline and its connected route, but I’m here as a witness and investigator, not a territorial commander."
Marrick kept the seal between two fingers and replied, "The wording leaves custody with the Sixth, so you can’t remove a child, socket, or record without witnessed consent."
Didi lowered the seal and answered, "That’s the wording I requested, because a royal name has already justified too many hands."
Elina set the travel cases beside the gate and said, "The Crown wanted a procession, but Didi wanted record keepers and clothing suited to weather."
Marrick glanced at the cases and replied, "Then the clothing is already more useful than the procession."
Didi’s mouth almost curved before she faced Hajin and said, "The old royal frequency reacted to the child, and the Watcher’s return proves the route predates our report."
Hajin studied the empty place at Didi’s hip and asked, "Why leave the sword behind?"
Didi touched the vacant loop and answered, "A sword changes the room before I speak, and I need the child to decide whether my voice is worth hearing."
Hajin thought, ’That’s the right reason,’ watching Didi keep both hands visible, ’but the right reason still has to survive the child’s answer.’
The Watcher sat in the courtyard with Ash asleep against her folded arm, while a clerk sorted guild records near the clinic door.
Didi stopped several paces away, then knelt and placed the Crown seal on the ground instead of holding it above Ash’s head.
Ash woke when the air changed, pulled his blanket higher, and watched Didi through one half-open eye.
The Watcher raised her rose-gold gaze and said, "He’s tired, so don’t use a royal title to make tiredness resemble obedience."
Didi bowed her head and replied, "Then I’ll wait until he asks whether I’m allowed to stay."
Ash looked from Didi to the Watcher, then toward Hajin, and made a small sound that stopped before it became a word.
Vella watched from the clinic threshold and said, "The bond is quiet, but the room carries old fear, so keep every promise simple."
Didi placed both hands on the courtyard stones and answered, "I left my sword, guards, and rank outside, while the people with me will write what they see."
Elina stepped back beside the cases and told the record keepers, "Write that exactly, but don’t turn his silence into agreement."
One keeper held the pen over the page, while the other looked toward Hajin until the clerk pointed toward Ash.
The clerk said, "Record what he does, not what an adult hopes his movement means, because hope isn’t evidence."
Didi remained on one knee until Ash sat up and pointed toward the sword beyond the gate.
Didi followed his gesture and said, "The weapon stays outside, because I want you to see that I can leave it there."
Ash pointed at the Crown seal, so Didi placed one finger beside the wax without touching it and replied, "It proves permission to ask, but it can’t command an answer."
The Watcher’s hand tightened around the blanket, though she didn’t pull Ash closer as the child leaned toward the seal.
Hajin watched the distance shorten and thought, ’She’s letting him choose it,’ keeping his voice out of the courtyard, ’which may be harder than any royal order.’
Ash crossed one hand over the stone and tapped the seal’s edge, while Didi stayed still enough for the contact to remain his choice.
The wax held, but frost formed over the royal mark before fading into the courtyard stone.
Didi watched the frost disappear and asked, "Was that your answer, or did the Crown answer for you?"
Ash frowned at the seal and shook his head, then drew his hand back beneath the blanket.
The Watcher studied the mark and said, "He rejected the pressure, but the act doesn’t reveal what he wants from you."
Didi nodded toward the record keepers and replied, "Write both parts, because the rejection is clear while his desire remains unknown."
Elina opened the first travel case and said, "The Crown will ask whether he’s an asset, a lost bloodline, or a route marker."
Hajin looked at her and answered, "He’s none of those until he chooses a name for himself, and no form changes that."
Elina met his eyes and replied, "That’s why Didi came without the officials who wanted to decide first."
The Watcher shifted her arm when Ash reached toward Didi again, and the child crawled one pace beyond her shadow before stopping.
Ash held out one finger, so Didi moved only after he kept it extended, then touched the finger with one knuckle.
The old royal frequency stirred beneath Ash’s skin without forming a halo, opening a route, or forcing the Crown seal to respond.
Aria watched the instruments from the doorway and said, "No designation, progression, injury, or system change appeared, only a brief contact response."
Didi glanced toward the light and answered, "Record the limit, but don’t make the limit sound like failure."
Aria lowered her glow and replied, "I record what happened, not what it deserves to mean."
Hajin thought, ’A royal child touched a royal seal and remained a child,’ keeping his hands at his sides, ’which stays a victory until someone turns it into evidence.’
Didi withdrew her hand before Ash did, then stood and faced the Watcher without reaching for the seal.
Didi said, "I need to investigate the route, but I won’t ask you to identify Ash before he can answer for himself."
The Watcher studied her and replied, "Then you may enter the records room, not the child’s choice."
Hajin opened the gate and said, "Begin with the Crown’s old claims, the socket bearing, and what Didi witnessed before arriving here."
Marrick handed Elina a blank visitor ledger and added, "Every page receives two signatures, yours and ours, so permission can’t become a private version later."
Elina accepted the ledger with both hands and answered, "Agreed, and I’ll keep the Crown’s questions outside the child’s room."
Didi wrapped the seal in cloth instead of returning it to her pocket, while Ash rested his head against the Watcher’s arm.
Hajin watched Didi cross the courtyard and thought, ’A procession would have made him a subject,’ keeping the gate open, ’but this visit might leave him a person.’
The record keepers followed Didi into the registry, while Elina remained near the gate to answer the Crown without bringing it inside again.
