Chapter 456: Three Travelers Speak Together

The first petitioners arrived before dust settled on the new board, though none knew the others had entered through different roads.

A flour-stained grain broker came from the west, a wheel carrier from the north, and a red-sleeved ferry worker crossed from beyond the basin.

Hajin watched them take separate desks and thought, ’Three ordinary complaints should be easier than one divine threat,’ counting their breaths, ’unless the threat hides inside paperwork.’

Taren assigned the arrival order, while Marrick opened three forms and kept their route names apart from the first sentence onward.

The grain broker lifted both hands and said, "A bridge crew took my deposit, but the far support remains open to the river, so my wagons can’t cross."

Taren leaned over the form and asked, "Did anyone threaten you, alter the contract, or stop you from sending another crew to inspect the support?"

The broker rubbed flour from his sleeve before replying, "No one threatened me, and the captain admitted the work was unfinished, but he said the reserve could pay for inspection."

Marrick marked the margin and answered, "That is a contract dispute until another fact connects it to the foreign route, so we won’t make the bridge stranger than it is."

At the northern desk, the wheel carrier leaned over his map and said, "My marker faced east when I left, but it pointed south when I returned, and every horse avoided the road."

Juna studied the scrape across his knuckles and asked, "Did the marker move, or did the road turn beneath it during the night?"

The carrier touched the dirt on his palm and replied, "The stone moved, because I found its scrape and reset it before coming here."

Vella examined his hands and said, "There is no foreign thread and no memory loss around the road, so keep the marker separate until Ferra checks it."

The ferry worker sat with both fists against his knees and said, "The crossing was clear, then the bell rang, and we stood on shore with tied ropes and no memory of leaving."

Didi looked up from the records table and asked, "What did the crew remember after the return, and what did they lose before anyone touched them?"

The worker stared at the floor and answered, "We remembered the water, but not the crossing, and the bell kept ringing after the boats were empty."

Aria lifted a pale light near his wrist and reported, "There is a memory interval disturbance, but no missing identity, circulation damage, or royal response."

Hajin stood near the clinic doorway so Ash could hear without becoming the center of the room, then noticed the three petitioners breathe together.

Hajin thought, ’Their accounts are different,’ resting his hand on the doorframe, ’but their bodies may carry the part their words can’t reach.’

The broker stopped rubbing his sleeve, the carrier straightened over his map, and the ferry worker lifted his head as all three faced the open hall.

They said, "The last wall has heard him," with one voice that ended before the final breath finished leaving the room.

All three collapsed, though Taren caught the broker, Juna guided the carrier’s head away from the floor, and Vella reached the ferry worker.

Vella pressed one palm against the worker’s chest and said, "Their cores are still theirs, but one foreign line passed through all three without replacing the speakers."

Didi reached toward the wrapped Crown seal before stopping several paces away from the bodies.

Didi said, "If the line touches the royal mark, I can close it with the seal, but that would make the inquiry part of the response."

Hajin shook his head and replied, "Leave the seal covered, because we don’t know whether the line wants the Crown or wants us to assume it does."

Elina carried the ledger away from the bodies and told the record keepers, "Write the sentence exactly, but don’t write that they chose it."

One keeper held the pen above the page and asked, "How do we record a sentence no one remembers deciding to speak?"

Elina answered, "Record the mouths, timing, and missing interval, then mark intention unknown, because uncertainty is still a fact."

The Watcher stood in the doorway with Ash against her side and said, "That isn’t refusal grammar, because it used a shared mouth without asking what the mouth wanted."

Aria placed three lights above the petitioners, and a fourth thread appeared between them with a dark center crossing the living memory lines.

Hajin watched the thread tighten and thought, ’One voice moved through three people,’ keeping his distance from the bodies, ’and none of them was asked to carry it.’

Vella moved to the first crossing inside the broker’s chest and said, "I can sever the shared line, but the cut may remove the interval they need to understand."

Hajin looked at the carrier’s scraped hands and replied, "Cut the connection, not the evidence, because a clean wound is still a record."

Vella nodded and drew gold into the center of the room, keeping the power outside every memory core.

The foreign thread tightened between the bodies, then pulled toward the open gate as though something outside had noticed the resistance.

The Watcher shifted her weight, but Hajin raised one hand and said, "Stay with Ash, because if the line is surveying, bringing him closer would make the child its answer."

The Watcher held still and answered, "Then cut it before the line learns the shape of his name, because distance is the only shield he has here."

Vella pressed her palm to the floor, and gold travelled along the shared thread without entering the memory cores.

The dark center split, while the three petitioners inhaled separately and woke with their own eyes fixed on different ceilings.

The grain broker touched the bridge form and asked, "Why am I on the floor, and why does the river sound closer than the room?"

The wheel carrier looked at his scraped hands and said, "I heard a voice, but it wasn’t mine, and it left before I could ask what it wanted."

The ferry worker began to cry before he could explain the reason, then covered his face with both hands.

Vella withdrew her gold and replied, "The line is severed, and your memories remain yours, but the speaking interval may never return."

The broker pressed one palm to the floor and answered, "Then write that I was here before it happened, because I need one fact that belongs to me."

Elina lowered her pen and said, "We already wrote it, and your name stays beside the first time recorded."

The carrier looked toward the wrong-facing marker and asked, "Did the line hear that road too, or did it only use us?"

Juna answered, "We don’t know yet, so we’ll inspect the marker without making you walk beside it alone."

The ferry worker lowered his hands and whispered, "The last wall has heard him, and I still don’t know who him was."

This time the sentence belonged only to him, and no foreign thread answered from the gate.

Hajin watched the silence settle and thought, ’The first sign didn’t kill anyone,’ rubbing the heat from his wrist, ’which means the next answer may believe it has time.’

Taren closed the petitions and said, "The guild pays for the bridge inspection, road survey, and ferry crew’s safe return, while the records keep every cost separate."

Vella studied the fading mark and replied, "The line wasn’t destroyed, only cut away from these three, so the next crossing may choose a stronger mouth."

Hajin turned toward the eastern wall and answered, "Then we find what followed it here before it finds another group that believes paperwork is safe."
