The Alder border began where the road stopped accepting Crown stones, and a living hedge blocked the wagons beneath pale morning light.
Eirwen stepped down first, twelve Shards resting around her shoulders, and raised one hand toward the hedge’s narrow bark face.
She said, "This is treaty land, so my authority leads until the last boundary pillar, and Hajin’s lordship doesn’t cross ahead of mine."
Hajin stopped beside the refusal socket case and replied, "The socket remains in my custody, but the road’s law is yours while we travel it."
Hajin watched one green eye open in the hedge and thought, ’The border asks who speaks before strength,’ resting his hand on the wagon rail, ’so this is our first honest test.’
The bark split across a narrow face, and green light moved over the stones without touching the wagons or the waiting animals.
The border said, "Name the travelers, because no road can carry people it hasn’t agreed to recognize."
Eirwen stepped onto the first stone and answered, "Eirwen Alder, High Envoy of the inner Court, returning under passage authority granted by the root council."
The hedge brightened around her feet, then waited while she turned toward Hajin and said, "Hajin, Lord of the Sixth, accepted suitor, bearer of the refusal socket, and guest under my responsibility."
Green light paused over Hajin before Eirwen continued, "Juna is a summoned solar hunter under Sixth witness records, and she carries her own weapon without owing the Court service."
Juna glanced toward Eirwen and replied, "That description is accurate enough to enter without making me sound tame, which is all I need from a border."
Eirwen named Loccy as a recovered Worldbearer under medical limits, while Loccy touched the brace seam and said, "Good, because Alder can carry its own trees."
Vella named herself beside Ferra’s instruments, then Rumi and Nari declared separate route authority before Didi presented herself without opening the Crown seal.
The border turned its green eye toward Didi and said, "Royal blood detected, inquiry rights uncertain, passage withheld until the claim is answered."
Didi kept both hands visible and replied, "The Crown seal grants inquiry permission, not ownership, and I enter as Didi under Eirwen’s witness."
A root pushed toward the wrapped seal, so Hajin reached for the Chain before Eirwen raised one hand between him and the living road.
Eirwen said, "No weapon at the border, because the treaty can’t survive every frightened answer becoming force."
Hajin stopped with his fingers above the handle and thought, ’She’s protecting the treaty from me,’ lowering his hand, ’not protecting the hedge from a weapon it already understands.’
Eirwen stepped between Didi and the root, then told the border, "You may test the traveler, but you won’t open a royal seal or place a guest outside the lattice without a clause."
The hedge narrowed its eye and answered, "The old Crown entered Alder through blood gates, so royal blood remains a threat category under inherited memory."
Eirwen placed one foot on the boundary stone and said, "The old Crown isn’t my current authority, and inherited suspicion cannot become a sentence under this treaty."
Green light climbed her leg, searching the root memory beneath her twelve Shards while Eirwen kept her Zone closed.
Eirwen remained still until the border finished searching for a command it could obey, then lowered her hand when the light withdrew.
The Watcher waited near the rear wagon with Ash against her side, while the demon child held Elina’s hand beside the second cart.
The hedge turned its green eye toward the demon child and said, "Unregistered bloodline, identity withheld, passage subject to classification."
Eirwen turned before Hajin could move and replied, "She is a traveler under the same guest law, and no border assigns a name she hasn’t accepted."
The root neared the child’s ankle, so Elina loosened her grip and said, "Look at me, because you can step back, stay, or cross when the rule is clear."
The child looked at Eirwen instead of the root, and Eirwen lowered her hand before saying, "You may cross as a guest, and you may return to the Sixth whenever you choose."
One step carried the child forward, while the root stopped a finger from her ankle without forming a halo or waking dormant bloodline.
The green light returned to Didi’s wrapped seal, and she unwrapped it without raising it before saying, "This is a record of permission, not a person, so it can’t answer for me."
The border opened another bark seam and asked, "What does the traveler seek, and what will she do if the road rejects her?"
Didi looked toward the eastern road and answered, "I seek a surviving royal route, the truth of an unknown designation, and names the Crown turned into claims."
The hedge held its light over her face and said, "You seek a route that may reject you."
Didi kept the seal low and replied, "Then rejection becomes part of the record, and I won’t call it theft."
Eirwen touched the first root and said, "The party accepts Alder passage law, but no traveler surrenders property, custody, or the right to return."
The border turned toward Hajin and asked, "What does the Lord of the Sixth carry, besides the title that brought him here?"
Hajin stepped forward and answered, "A refusal socket in a sealed case, six Rings I won’t open without need, and responsibility for people who entered under my protection."
The hedge tightened its roots around the stones and asked, "Do you carry those people as property, Lord of the Sixth?"
Hajin looked toward the Watcher, Ash, the demon child, and Didi before replying, "No, I carry the duty to protect their choices while they travel beside me."
Roots loosened around the road and said, "Passage granted under Alder witness, no royal seal may command the living border, and no guest may be claimed without a new choice."
Eirwen inclined her head and replied, "The clause is accepted, and I’ll answer for the party until the last pillar."
Across the road, the hedge opened to reveal pale roots beneath the soil, plus a second path that hadn’t existed from the Crown side.
Rumi stepped toward the new route and said, "The road folds behind the border, but it doesn’t lead back to the place we left."
Nari marked the old road with a dark line and added, "Return remains possible, but it will require the same witness who granted passage."
Ferra recorded the root response while Loccy kept one hand near the wagon brace, and Juna watched the branches for movement.
Juna looked into the living road and said, "Something moved beneath the branches, and it knew we had crossed before the wagons did."
The border closed one eye and answered, "That is Alder’s problem, and now it belongs to Eirwen’s authority."
Eirwen stepped through first, while Hajin followed without opening a Ring and carried the socket case in both hands.
Hajin thought, ’My title crossed only after hers,’ watching the hedge accept each traveler, ’and that’s how it should be when the road belongs to her.’
The last wagon passed the boundary, and the hedge closed behind them while the Crown road vanished beneath new leaves.
