Chapter 461: Roots beneath the Road

The Alder road carried them beneath living branches, while roots shifted under the packed soil whenever the wagons crossed an old boundary mark.

Eirwen rode at the front with one hand on the green rail, and Hajin kept the refusal socket behind the second wagon where every traveler could see it.

Hajin watched the branches tighten overhead and thought, ’The road notices us,’ resting his hand on the case, ’but noticing isn’t the same as welcoming.’

Rumi and Nari walked ahead of the first wagon, with separate threads on each turn so the route could be followed without opening behind the party.

Vella had forbidden further strain, so Loccy rode beside the supply cart with only a rolled blanket before her next examination.

The Watcher followed with Ash against her shoulder, while the demon child sat beside Elina under a canvas cover that kept the branches from closing over her face.

Juna moved along the upper limbs and called down, "The bridge ahead is full of civilians, and roots beneath it are moving against the current."

Eirwen stopped the lead wagon and replied, "Nobody crosses until I speak with the bridge keeper, because Alder law still applies beneath these branches."

The road opened onto a living bridge above a ravine filled with white mist, where workers, farmers, and two families waited beside pack animals.

The keeper met Eirwen at the central root arch and said, "The bridge carried water for three generations, but it began pulling at its roots after the last bell."

Vella placed her palm on the railing and answered, "Pressure is coming from below, and the foreign thread is moving through the roots instead of the people."

Hajin looked into the mist and saw dark shapes turning beneath the bridge, then thought, ’The civilians already stand on the danger,’ touching the wagon rail, ’so movement comes before answers.’

Roots split beneath the span as pale animals climbed from the ravine with long jaws, bark plates over their ribs, plus black lines through their eyes.

The first creature struck the underside, bending the living bridge toward the mist as the civilians shouted and the pack animals pulled against their harnesses.

Loccy stepped onto the central root before anyone called her name, then opened four Wings and took the whole bridge as one burden.

She braced both feet and shouted, "Move in order, because the bridge can carry you briefly, but it can’t carry everyone running at once."

Rumi reached the far end and spread one hand along the root path before saying, "Follow my line to the western bank, then stop at the red branch."

Nari moved to the near end and called, "I’ll close the burrows after the last body leaves, but I won’t seal the road while anyone remains below."

The civilians followed Rumi’s line until a bark-plated creature struck the side rail, and one pack animal broke loose from its harness.

Juna dropped from the upper branch, caught the harness, and said, "It’s frightened, not hostile, so don’t make it fight the bridge while the bridge fights itself."

The keeper took the harness from her and led the animal toward the far bank, while Rumi widened the return line around the remaining families.

Vella moved along the bridge, touching each worker’s shoulder to confirm that no foreign thread had entered a living body.

Vella reached the third family and reported, "Nobody carries the Concord line, because the roots are the host and the animals are only its teeth."

Hajin opened the first Ring and raised Aegis beneath the bridge without touching the civilians above.

Dark animals struck the barrier, and the impact travelled through the mist into the living roots.

Hajin watched Loccy’s Wings strain and said, "Aegis is slowing the bites, but it won’t hold the span if the roots keep answering below."

Eirwen pressed one hand to the railing and replied, "The bridge remembers its shape, but foreign pressure is teaching it to pull toward the ravine."

Hajin looked at the shifting rail and asked, "Can you remind it which road it chose to carry?"

Eirwen answered, "I can remind it, but I can’t force a living structure to carry people who refuse to move."

She sent a narrow root signal through the rail, and the bridge straightened by one arm’s length before another creature struck beneath it.

Rumi called from the far bank, "The last family is crossing, but two workers stopped at the center to help Loccy."

Loccy turned her head without releasing the bridge and said, "Leave me the burden, because four Wings can hold longer than two frightened workers can promise."

The keeper pulled the workers toward Rumi’s line before either could argue, while the bridge groaned beneath Loccy’s shoulders.

Hajin thought, ’Loccy isn’t proving strength,’ watching her locked stance, ’she’s choosing the limit that lets everyone else leave.’

The final family reached the far bank, and Nari closed her fingers over the near root when Vella called from an exposed gap below.

Vella said, "No living bodies remain beneath the bridge, so seal the burrows now before another animal reaches the span."

Nari sent her route authority through the ground, closing the burrows one after another while the last creature forced its head through the final opening.

Juna dropped beside Loccy and drove one Wing through the creature’s bark plate, pinning it to the outer root without touching the living bridge.

Juna held the animal still and said, "The body has no separate mind left to save, because the foreign line is all that moves inside it."

Hajin opened a second Ring and caught the Concord line as it tried to retreat through the bridge roots.

Ferra arrived with a metal pin between her fingers and called, "Pull the line through this, because I can hold it outside the root memory while Eirwen restores the span."

Hajin drew the line into the pin, and the dark animal collapsed into bark dust before the creature’s jaws could open again.

The bridge shook beneath Loccy’s Wings, so Vella reached the center and pressed one hand against her back.

Vella said, "Three more breaths, then release the burden into the root’s own weight, because your recovery matters after the bridge settles."

Loccy held for three breaths, then lowered her Wings as the bridge settled across the ravine and the white mist dropped from its supports.

Eirwen sent a final root signal through the rail, while Nari sealed the last burrow beneath the near bank.

The keeper returned with the civilians behind him and said, "The road is open, but something beneath it has learned to imitate the living roots."

Eirwen looked at the sealed ground and replied, "Alder will record foreign influence here, not failure in the road that carried you."

Rumi restored the return line, Nari marked the closed burrows, and Juna climbed into the branches to inspect the next stretch.

Hajin closed his second Ring and told the keeper, "We cross after the civilians clear the bank, because no expedition outranks the road it uses."

Loccy sat on the bridge rail once the structure steadied, her shoulders shaking while Vella checked the healing mark.

Hajin watched the brace hold and thought, ’Four Wings held a bridge,’ counting the breaths Vella recorded, ’and the price stayed measured in strain instead of bones.’

The party crossed only after the keeper confirmed that the roots had gone quiet beneath the road.
