"Kill them!"
Yang Liehuo saw a zombie climbing over its kind’s back, trying to get onto the rampart. He was shocked and roared, thrusting his steel rod forward.
Squish...
Fortunately, this time the enhancement hadn’t granted the zombie invincible skulls; its fragile bones couldn’t withstand the thrust of the steel rod.
Fueled by anger, Yang Liehuo drove the rod through the zombie’s head, creating a hole and killing the first zombie that reached the second row of ramparts. Its body slumped into the gaps of the ramparts, unintentionally providing an easier path for the zombies behind it to climb.
"Kill!"
"Kill them all!"
No time was left for hesitation or indecisiveness. The first row of fighters all swung their weapons to attack.
The enhanced zombies instilled them with primal fear—the fearless madness, the relentless attacks, coupled with wilder strength and speed, made everyone feel like they were back in the past, back to the first time encountering zombie creatures!
Fortunately, after over four months of trials and tribulations, everyone had managed to hone their skills. Even with fear in their hearts, they remained resolute in maintaining their combat prowess because, in this war between species, it’s either you die, or I perish!
The killing pace wasn’t slow, but the zombies coming up from behind moved even faster.
Clang...
"Ahh, watch out!"
Just after Zhong Xiaoshan swung a large wrench to solve one zombie, another suddenly leaped at her from behind, like a starving tiger pouncing. She was the helpless lamb awaiting slaughter!
This scene frightened her, triggering her bad habit of screaming. But she was still much better than before; even though she screamed in fright, she hadn’t forgotten to attack. Suddenly, a force withdrew her to the side.
"Die!"
Yang Liehuo thrust upward with one hand holding the steel rod, piercing the zombie’s head. He moved aside with the force coming from the zombie and looked at Zhong Xiaoshan.
"Are you okay?"
"I’m fine, I’m fine. Thanks, Brother Huo!"
Zhong Xiaoshan steadied herself and returned to battle.
The stalemate slightly eased with the first wave of zombies killed, yet as another sixty or seventy zombies rushed forth, circumstances reversed.
Crack...
The wooden ramparts couldn’t withstand the zombies’ frenzy; the first row of ramparts began to break. Piled zombie corpses topping the ramparts became a stepping stone for the incoming zombies, paving a highway toward their fleshy feast!
Howl, howl!
The zombies shrieked wildly, quickly crossing the obstacles, leaping over the ramparts and piled corpses. An overwhelming sense of oppression enveloped everyone!
Are there many zombies?
Only about fifty or sixty, really not that many.
Are the zombies strong?
Very strong...strong enough that the Reserve Team members struggled to cope, catching them mentally unprepared and taken by surprise!
"Fall back, retreat quickly!"
Ratatat, ratatatata...
Amidst the furious roars, a barrage of gunfire erupted; someone had opened fire.
Cold weapons were no longer enough to resolve the immediate threat. Yang Liehuo and Lü Leiyang almost simultaneously pulled their gun charges and began shooting.
Pew pew pew...
The diving zombies were halted in their tracks by the bullets, their bodies twisting in the air. Some were shot in the head, falling to the ground like a tattered sack!
If there were only two rifles, it wouldn’t block the advance of sixty or seventy zombies. Fortunately, Zhong Xiaoshan, Guo Dachao, and Wang Longzhong picked up rifles once free!
Ratatat...
Five rifles fired in unison, with the bullets taking down zombies one by one, yet they couldn’t stop the rest from pressing forward!
"Ahh...get lost, you ghosts!"
"Oh no, Sister Fang!"
Guttural cries erupted as a zombie breached the firepower net and charged into the crowd, immediately attacking a Reserve Team member!
"Ah...damn it, die, die, you’re all going to die!"
Seeing one of his men bitten, Yang Liehuo turned red with rage, firing one-handed and gripping a steel rod in the other. Long-range and close combat were all the same to him, but he couldn’t turn the tide, and another person was soon taken down!
"Help...help...me!"
One of the girls, distracted after seeing a comrade bitten, slowed for just a moment, only to be taken down by a zombie. Her response was quick—she countered even as she fell, yet her force wasn’t enough to reverse the situation...
As soon as she hit the ground, her face was bitten!
"Sister Lian!"
Someone roared in anger, trying to help only to be dragged away, as Sister Lian had already been torn apart by zombies, clearly beyond saving.
In a flash, two more were bitten and one killed, with the situation quickly deteriorating. Those wielding guns had initially shot without restraint, but when their people were bitten, they became hesitant. The formation crumbled in an instant!
Even with guns, they dared not fire carelessly—accurate shooters weren’t on Celestial Horse Island, and the ones present had no confidence in their shooting abilities...
"Xiaojie, stay close to me!"
Guo Dachao’s face was unusually serious, his rifle out of bullets with no time to reload. He dropped the rifle and pulled out his steel rod again, ready to fight for his life right there!
"How did we become so weak? I don’t want to die!"
Lü Leiyang’s fair face was full of unwillingness as he ran back frantically, not escaping but buying time to reload.
"Uncle..."
"Xingui, even if we die today in battle...be careful..."
Wang Longzhong seemed to know what Wang Xingui wanted to say, his eyes blood-red as he wielded his weapon. He was immediately knocked down by a zombie charging at him from the front, but in the nick of time, Wang Xingui kicked the zombie away, saving his life.
Speedy, strong, and reckless, the zombies charged like cannonballs from the scenic area, heading toward the gradually decaying crowd.
Yi Xiaoling was in shock, lacking experience in dealing with zombies. Though she often fiddled with knives, they were two-inch grafting knives. Now, even with a steel rod specifically for zombies, she had no clue how to use it and was taken down by a zombie, sprawling a good distance away.
She was fortunate not to fall on the spot; otherwise, Sister Lian’s fate would have been a warning. But she was not relieved, as the zombie that dragged her down crawled toward her with limbs moving faster than she could scoot back!
"Get up! Run!"
Ma Changshou suddenly emerged, swinging a steel rod to bash the zombie. With a loud bang, he knocked it rolling back, pulling Yi Xiaoling to run.
Their combat ability wasn’t great, and relying on the ramparts to mechanically stab zombies was feasible, but at this intensity, it was akin to walking into a deathtrap!
Whether they could escape was uncertain, entirely dependent on their comrades’ capability. If they couldn’t block the zombies, it was assuredly a dead end!
Among the crowd, Zhong Xiaoshan’s hair was disheveled, gripping a large wrench tightly in her right hand, her face pale. Her ears were filled with people’s screams and the zombies’ cries, her left hand clutching a grenade, heart pounding as she watched the zombies charging madly. She decided...
"Get out of the way!"
Suddenly, a loud shout from the parking lot direction cut through the chaos.
People glanced sideways and saw the SUV roaring toward them with a ferocious momentum.
"I’ll smash you scoundrels!"
In the car, Duan Wuhu’s face was twisted, steering into the running zombies. He was sure that Sister Lian hadn’t died even while being bitten, but he couldn’t care about that now.
If they didn’t stop the zombies’ offensive right there, many more would die!
Bang!
Five or six zombies flew on impact, while the remaining thirty-something collided with the SUV, producing a series of crashing sounds. Due to the downslope of the mountain road and the not-so-low center of gravity, the series of zombie collisions tilted the SUV!
