Chapter 89: The Dark Pit

The rushing wind roared in Kale’s ears as the canopy of the Tigerwood Forest receded far above. Gravity dragged him down toward the dark, writhing pit at the bottom of the crater.

Beside his ear, Neo’s small wings beat furiously against the gale, its claws hooked tightly into the thick fabric of Kale’s coat as it tried in vain to arrest their momentum.

Through their shared mental link, Kale felt the hydra’s sharp, incandescent anger focused on Lazek Oberon, who was now a tiny, motionless mark floating against the pale morning clouds.

The system didn’t delay its response. Driven by Kale’s command, a sudden surge of heat flared behind his brow.

It felt like a direct neural download... a high-speed transmission of raw data forced straight into his brain’s frontal lobe.

He didn’t flinch or falter. His mind, bolstered by his Hexarion Human physiology and the Blessed Headband resting against his forehead, absorbed the influx of tactical data with clean, disciplined speed.

[Information Injection: Black Chameleons]

[Rank: Peak Feral rank]

[Species: Black Chameleons (Lizard sub-type)]

[Beast Ability: Transformation Ability (Sub-type)]

The system data made it clear: while these creatures were physically unextraordinary when isolated, their true lethal danger stemmed from a single biological feature... their transformation trait.

At the Feral rank, individual lizards couldn’t morph their entire bodily structure. Instead, they possessed the capacity to adapt specific limbs or organs, mirroring the dangerous traits of other beasts they had encountered or devoured.

Kale watched the sea of dark scales below react to his rapid fall. His vision, sharpened by the passive benefits of his Dragon Bane title, picked out the terrifying details of the carpet below.

He saw chameleons extending serrated, mana-conductive tusks identical to those of a Moss Boar. Other lizards shifted their forelimbs into the long, curved talons of Shadow Sabres. Further back in the swarm, several chameleons distended their throats, rapidly forming the swollen, acid-dripping venom sacs of Sulfur Hyenas.

[As they progress in rank, the greater this transformation ability becomes,]

The system noted in its flat, mechanical tone.

[Because they can transform parts of their bodies into almost any other Feral rank creature, their combat might is frighteningly unpredictable.]

A calculating thought crossed Kale’s mind. These creatures were walking collections of raw biological traits.

If Neo devoured them, could the hydra’s All Devour ability digest and integrate these shifting genetic variables? It was an intriguing possibility, but his practical instinct immediately tempered the thought.

He was an Apprentice Tamer relying on a single Lesser Feral beast, falling directly into a carpet of three thousand Peak Feral predators capable of altering their physical form on the fly to counter whatever attack he threw at them.

"Neo, stop trying to fly," Kale ordered through their mental connection. "We hit them hard."

The hydra let go of his coat shoulder, its three heads opening to hiss a promise of violence.

Kale reached into his system storage and drew out his twin daggers with a mental command. He immediately infused the blades with a high-frequency edge of pure mana, utilising Lesser Mana Manipulation to turn the steel into hums of kinetic cutting force.

He directed his Beast Force through the newly altered pathways in his body, pushing his Hexarion Human frame to its physical limit.

Ten meters above the pit floor, Kale rotated his body mid-air, turning to face the floor directly. Thousands of needle-like white eyes tracked his trajectory, mouths opening in anticipation of his impact.

"Neo, now!" Kale shouted.

The palm-sized Nemesis Hydra darted ahead of him, its aura ballooning until the air in the crater grew heavy with draconic pressure. All three of its maws stretched to their limits, unleashing a concentrated psychic wave that shattered the quiet inside the pit.

[Beast Ability: Rattling Roar activated]

The psychic shockwave slammed into the centre of the nest a split second before Kale’s boots slammed into the carpet of scales.

The effect was immediate. Thousands of black lizards froze in absolute paralysis as the superior frequency disrupted their nervous systems. It was a brief half-second opening... a tiny window that meant nothing to an ordinary fighter, but to Kale and Neo, it was more than enough time to work.

They initiated a savage slaughter unlike any other.

Kale transformed into a blur of green motion and steel. He moved with the cold precision of a surgeon in a slaughterhouse, his daggers slicing into the weak seams of the chameleons’ shifting armour.

With every step, heads rolled off shoulders; with every pivot, throats were cut wide open. The lizards were packed so densely together that Kale didn’t need to align his strikes... he kept his daggers moving in continuous, fluid arcs.

Beside him, Neo was a whirlwind of emerald scales and sharp teeth.

The hydra relied on its Draconic Body trait to ignore the spiked tails and hardened horns of the paralysed beasts, its three heads snapping independently to crack spines and crush skulls.

The creature wasn’t merely killing; it was harvesting. Neo’s maws unhinged wide, snatching up the glowing cores of fallen lizards with mechanical rhythm.

[The Nemesis Hydra has devoured fifty Peak Feral rank Darkness Cores]

[Integrating ’Transformation’ trait: 0.1% progress]

The mental shock of Neo’s Rattling Roar faded quickly. Within seconds, the outer ranks of the swarm began shaking off the lingering paralysis. But during that short window, Kale and Neo had already cleared hundreds of the creatures.

More importantly, Kale’s heightened perception had fully registered the geography of the pit.

His mind mapped out the density and placement of the remaining thousands of Black Chameleons.

They were trapped inside a steep, high-walled crater with no clear exits, and the lizards were already adjusting their strategy. He saw rows of chameleons near the front growing thick, overlapping hide plates to block his blades, while those in the rear grew long, barbed tongues coated in sizzling digestive acid.

The situation was worsening quickly. The sheer volume of the swarm began pressing inward from every angle. The heavy odour of green blood and scorched chitin filled the air, making it difficult to draw a clean breath.

"Neo, split up!" Kale commanded. "Cover the left flank. I will take the right. We increase the efficiency of the kill zone."

The hydra didn’t hesitate. It broke away toward the left, its three necks hissing in harsh harmony. To maximise its control over the mob, Neo unleashed its rich bloodline pressure.

The Monarch Beast’s ability washed outward in a visible wave, a pulse of absolute draconic dominance that caused the legs of nearby chameleons to buckle instantly. They were standing before a higher genetic entity, and their basic instincts commanded them to submit.

Simultaneously, Kale released his own heavy aura of killing intent.

It was a cold, oppressive weight built from the brutal experience of slaying the Red Dragon twice. It wasn’t raw mana or magical pressure; it was the psychological weight of having cut down a divine entity.

As the intent washed over the right side of the swarm, the chameleons faltered. To them, the air felt frigid, and every shadow seemed to sharpen into a blade edge.

Kale drove into the right flank like a vengeful ghost. He abandoned basic slashing techniques, applying Artificing principles directly to his close-quarters movement.

He channelled mana pulses through his daggers, creating micro-explosions of force upon contact. Every time his steel touched an obsidian scale, the internal skeletal structure of the lizard shattered from the reverberating force.

A cluster of five chameleons shifted their legs into the thick, heavy hooves of Impact Bisons, attempting to crush his feet. Kale didn’t step back. He lunged straight into their centre, his daggers whirling in a tight display of martial skill.

Before any hoof could strike the ground, the throats of all five beasts were cut open.

On the left side of the pit, Neo was a relentless force of destruction. The hydra paid no mind to the streams of acidic saliva, its Octagon trait instantly sealing minor pockmarks on its scales.

Neo used its Draconic Body to plough straight through the enemy lines, its physical weight crushing Peak Feral bodies into broken bone and leaking energy.

Yet despite their pace, the swarm appeared bottomless.

For every ten lizards Kale killed, twenty more flooded into the gap. They were beginning to organise, using their transformation traits to construct living shield-walls of heavy scales while rear-rank beasts launched long-range elemental barbs from safety.

Kale’s breathing remained controlled, but his mana reserves were steadily declining.

He checked the internal system clock. Only two minutes had elapsed.

He still had eight minutes to endure in this pit of shifting flesh and claws. Above, he could feel Lazek’s impassive gaze tracking the fight from his mount, evaluating whether his disciple would collapse or master the chaos below.

Kale’s eyes burned with cold determination. He had no intention of breaking here. He had survived the World Dragon’s curse and the Red Dragon’s breath; these lizards were nothing more than raw materials for his advancement.

"Neo! Maximum output!" Kale shouted, his voice echoing off the high stone walls of the crater.

The hydra roared in response, its three heads weaving together as the green light of its absolute affinity began to bleed outward into the shadows of the pit. The true fight was only beginning.
