Chapter 90: Endless butchery...

The emerald starlight of Neo’s absolute affinity clashed with the malevolent, suffocating pressure of Kale’s killing intent, creating a pocket of stagnant air at the bottom of the dark crater.

For a heartbeat, the silence was absolute. The thousands of Black Chameleons, creatures bound to the predatory hierarchy of the Tigerwood Forest, were forced to halt.

They felt a type of fear that had never been encoded into their genetic memory. It was the terror of a lesser species standing before the architect of its own obsolescence.

The needle-like white eyes of the lizards flickered with hesitation as the Monarch Beast ability of the Nemesis Hydra rippled across their ranks.

However, the pause was merely a momentary glitch in the carnage. These were not intellectual entities capable of rationalising survival. They were frenzied predators driven by an instinct to kill far older and deeper than fear.

They were in their own territory, a cradle of shadow that no other creature in the forest dared approach. Backing off was never a choice.

The collective hive mind of the nest realised that if these invaders were not consumed, their territory would cease to exist. With a unified, screeching hiss that vibrated through stone walls, the swarm surged forward.

They attacked without regard for safety, a tide of black scales and shifting flesh seeking to bury the invaders under sheer weight.

Kale met the onslaught like a man possessed. He was no longer the calculated Artificer or cautious Apprentice.

He fought with the savage, relentless efficiency of the monstrous dragon he had slaughtered. His daggers were extensions of a will that had survived a million failed simulations. Every movement was a lethal arc of mana-enhanced steel.

He became a whirlwind of green motion, his boots finding purchase on mounting piles of obsidian carcasses. He moved through the swarm with the fluidity of a predator that had forgotten its humanity, his green hair whipping in his wake.

His Hexarion Human physiology allowed him to perceive mana flow in the air, allowing him to dodge strikes invisible to human eyes.

But perhaps the true horror of the battle was displayed by Neo. The Nemesis Hydra did not just fight; it thrived in the face of overwhelming odds. It was an entity that flourished under unmatched adversity.

Each second of slaughter was like a strike from a blacksmith’s hammer, forging a dull blade into a weapon of supreme perfection.

Neo’s battle prowess improved by the second. Its three heads operated in a terrifyingly synchronised harmony, snapping spines and tearing out cores with surgical precision.

The hydra’s superior intelligence allowed it to recognise mistakes in its movements and improve mid-battle subconsciously. If a lizard’s acidic tongue grazed its flank, Neo adjusted its flight pattern instantly, ensuring the same gap in its defence would never open again.

The little creature became an absolute bringer of death.

Time lost all meaning for the monstrous hydra and its dragon-slayer master. The world contracted until it was nothing more than the scent of copper, the sizzle of acid, and the rhythmic thump of failing hearts. Kale and Neo entered a flow state.

They knew nothing but endless slaughter, uncaring of their own bodies.

They ignored shallow gashes and the numbing cold of shadows, monitoring only if physical conditions reached a state critical enough to hamper battle prowess. They were machines of biological discord, deleting life as fast as it was presented to them.

The Black Chameleons remained a deadly enemy due to their chaotic transformation ability.

Even in their frenzy, they continued morphing limbs and organs with unpredictable speed. A lizard would lunge with the claws of a Sabre, only to sprout heavy, metallic horns of an Impact Bison mid-leap.

This volatility meant Kale and Neo could not rely on standard combat patterns. At best, they could predict timing through mana ripples. They could not know what form the strike would take until flesh had warped.

This necessitated a level of reflex that would have broken a normal human’s nervous system.

Whenever damage became too severe to ignore, Neo used the Octagon trait. Green starlight pulsed from the hydra’s scales, sealing a deep cut on its wing or mending a bone in Kale’s leg instantly.

This regenerative capacity allowed them to maintain a pace of carnage that defied the laws of stamina. By the time seven minutes had passed, a fact recorded only by the cold system clock in Kale’s vision, the pair lost all track of the world outside the crater.

They were swimming in a sea of obsidian death, having slaughtered 80% of the initial three thousand creatures. The crater floor was no longer visible, buried under a carpet of cooling meat.

Due to the endless grave of corpses and the iron scent of blood turning the air into thick mist, the remaining 20% of the horde changed. They were no longer attacking mindlessly.

The survivors were the strongest, most adaptable, and most cunning.

They had become dreadfully wary of both Kale and Neo. They circled at the edges of the slaughter, white eyes reflecting the dim green glow of the hydra.

They moved with a tactical patience signalling the arrival of something far more dangerous than common Feral-rank dregs.

Suddenly, Kale felt something rough and cold touch his feet. He frowned, senses momentarily clouded by the adrenaline of the flow state. He looked down and saw what appeared to be a thick tree root crossing over his toes.

It was a common sight in the Tigerwood Forest, and he attempted to move his feet away nonchalantly to regain positioning for the next strike. He found himself unable to do so. His legs were stuck, fused to the pit floor as if gravity itself had increased tenfold.

When he looked down once more with focus, the horror of the situation settled in his gut. What he perceived as a tree root was not wood. It was the long, tapering tail of a snake, wreathed in translucent, bubbling slime.

It possessed an acidic corrosiveness already burning through his boots into his skin. Only then did he realise what had happened.

’An Alpha-rank Black Chameleon,’ thought Kale in a flash,

Something possessing far greater transformation ability, and it had used that very ability to sneak past his senses.

It had morphed a part of its body to mimic the inanimate terrain of the crater, waiting until Kale was distracted by the sheer volume of the horde to curl its tail around his ankles.

A sharp shriek echoed from the other side of the clearing. Kale’s head snapped toward the sound and saw something similar happen to Neo. Another Alpha-rank chameleon disguised part of its body as a jagged rock formation.

As Neo flew past to harvest a core, the rock surged upward, transforming into a set of barbed pincers that clamped down on the hydra’s left wing. Both master and beast were caught off guard by the tactical patience of Alpha-rank predators.

They were lured into a state of arrogant efficiency, only to be snared by true lords of the nest.

Neo communicated with its master through their mental bond, thoughts filled with sharp, hissing fury. It struggled against the pincers, its Draconic Body trait preventing it from being crushed, but it was immobilised.

Kale gritted his teeth as acid on his feet began to smoke, sending searing, numbing heat up his legs.

He told Neo about his own situation, realising they were systematically targeted by a pair of monsters far more intelligent than the drones they had been butchering. The remaining drones began closing in, sensing the vulnerability of their prey.

Kale had a sudden idea, his mind calculating variables of the Octagon trait and the summoning link.

He realised that for the time being, they had to fight these Alpha-rank monstrous chameleons while they were still transforming.

He swung his daggers at the tail bound around his feet, but the Alpha lizard transformed its hide into stone-like bark of a Moss Boar, causing his blades to spark uselessly. The creature then began growing rows of serrated teeth along its tail, preparing to shred his calves.

"Neo, now!" Kale commanded mentally.

Suddenly, Neo unsummoned itself. The hydra vanished from the rock-creature’s pincers in a burst of green mana, retreating into the abstract space of the bond. In the same heartbeat, the creature appeared again, bursting out from Kale’s very own shadow.

The Alpha lizard binding Kale’s feet was totally unprepared for the sudden manifestation of the hydra behind its head. Together, master and beast took down the first Alpha quickly.

Kale plunged his mana-enhanced daggers into the creature’s eyes while Neo’s central head crushed its skull.

Without pausing to breathe, they went after the second one. The battle was a chaotic mess of shifting limbs and elemental bursts, but with their combined focus, they eventually tore the second Alpha apart.

However, the act of fighting two Alphas while already near the limit of their endurance ended up draining all of their energies.

The last of Kale’s mana was expended in the final strike, and Neo’s Beast Force was completely depleted.

They stood in the centre of the silent crater, surrounded by a mountain of corpses, but they were badly wounded. The acid had eaten deep into Kale’s flesh, and Neo’s wings were tattered.

Because their energy was gone, the Octagon trait would no longer respond. They could not heal anymore. They were alone in the dark, and the silence of the forest felt like a shroud.
